Auburn Softball Defeats Georgia Tech

February 15, 2000

AUBURN- Auburn scored two runs in the fourth inning to break a tie game on the way to a 3-1 win over Georgia Tech at the Auburn Softball Complex. The win improves Auburn's record to 5-2, while Georgia Tech drops to 2-1.

With the game tied at 1-1 and runners on second and third, Auburn's Kimball Pratt singled to center field to score Sarah Orozco from third. Pratt then scored on a fielder's choice by freshman Rasheedah Hameed to put Auburn up 3-1.

Hameed scored Auburn's first run of the day in the third inning when sophomore Ashley Moore singled up the middle, scoring Hameed from third.

Junior college transfer Jennifer Lofton (2-1) got the win for Auburn after relieving Jennifer Joiner in the third inning, pitching the final five innings. Lofton gave up four hits and struck out three.

"I thought Jennifer (Lofton) did a good job," Auburn head coach Tina Deese said. "We were concerned with (Georgia) Tech because they came in with 32 hits in their last two games. We were prepared to use all three of our pitchers, but Lofton did a good job of holding them at bay."

Georgia Tech got its run in the second inning when Jamie Frost doubled to center field to score Ellen Styer, who had advanced to third on the previous pitch because of a passed ball. Styer went 2-for-2 with a run scored on the day.

Tiffany Goodman (0-1) pitched the first four innings to receive the loss for the Yellow Jackets. She gave up seven hits.

Orozco and Moore each went 2-for-3 to pace Auburn.

Auburn returns to action Friday, February 18, as AU hosts the Tiger Invitational. The Tigers are scheduled to play Indiana State at noon and UAB at 5 p.m. The evening games of the tournament will be held at the Auburn city softball complex.
