February 22, 2000

AUBURN- Freshman second baseman Jodie Van Ooyen had a three-run home run to lead Auburn to an 8-0 win over Troy State at the Auburn Softball Complex. The game was called in the fifth inning under the eight-run mercy rule. Auburn's record improves to 11-3, the best start in school history. Troy State fell to 5-4.

Jennifer Lofton (4-1) pitched all five innings and allowed only one hit to earn the win for the Tigers. She faced only 16 batters, allowing no walks while striking out six.

"The funny thing is, she thought she had a bad day," Auburn coach Tina Deese said. "To allow no walks, that's a great day. Pitching has been a pleasant surprise this year."

Junior catcher Michelle Martin increased her school-record hitting streak to 14 games, going 1-for-2 with a RBI and a run scored. She has recorded a hit in each game Auburn has played this season.

Auburn scored one run in the second inning on a RBI-single up the middle by Kimball Pratt to score Van Ooyen. Van Ooyen added her three-run homer in the third inning, her second of the season.

"Jodie's been hitting the ball so well," Deese said. "I'm glad it's paying off for her."

Auburn added a run in the fourth inning on a RBI-single from Martin to score Sarah Orozco. The Tigers added their final three runs in the fifth inning on a RBI-single from Ashley Moore, followed by a two-RBI single by Orozco with the bases loaded. Orozco finished 2-for-4 with two RBI while Moore finished 3-for-4.

Kim Unkenholz pitched the first two innings to receive the loss for Troy State. Tara Miche
