AUBURN- The Auburn Tigers (11-4) end its five game win streak by dropping both games of a doubleheader to Samford (5-7) at the Auburn University Softball Complex. The Bulldogs won the first game in extra innings 1-0 and the second game by the score of 4-3.
Auburn's Jaime Rasmussen pitched six scoreless innings and allowed only three hits for Auburn in the first game of a doubleheader against Samford. The Tigers were the first to get a hit in the game when Sarah Orozco hit a double to center field. Jen Lofton came in for Rasmussen in the seventh inning and allowed one run on one hit. With the game tied at zero, in the eighth inning, Samford leftfielder Jennifer Silinsky hit a game winning RBI single to score catcher Michelle Dickey. Mertens picked up the win in game one for the Bulldogs while Auburn's Jen Joiner (4-2) recorded the loss.
"Jaime Rasmussen pitched beautifully," says Head Coach Tina Deese, "But you just can't win with 14 strikeouts and nine pop outs."
In the second game, Samford started the game with one run in the first inning. Auburn would score in the second inning off of a double to left field by Becky Cleary to score Jodie Van Ooyen. Marcella Passarelli followed with a single to bring in Cleary. Right-hander Jen Lofton came in the game in the third inning and struck out five batters and allowed three hits. Samford would score one more time when Jennifer Graham hit a single to center and scored Michelle Ashley. Auburn's Passarelli led off the fifth inning with a solo home run over the right field wall, which brought the Tigers within one run of Samford. In the end, Samford wins 4-3 to sweep the Tigers at home. Starter Jen Joiner recorded the loss and fell to 3-2 on the season.
Catcher Michelle Martin's 14-game hitting streak came to an end during the first game against Samford.
Auburn heads to Tampa, Fla. to play in the University of South Florida/Gladstones Tournament, Feb. 25-27. On Friday, the Tigers will play Indiana at 10 a.m. and Michigan at 4 p.m.
