AUBURN- Auburn went 2-0 in day three of the first-annual War Eagle Classic to go 4-0 for the tournament. The Tigers defeated Akron 4-1 and Indiana 5-3 to improve their record to 20-9 overall. Junior pitcher Mary Petrie (2-0) earned both wins for the Tigers in her first two starts of the season.
"It's good to see that we can call on Mary now that SEC play is beginning," Auburn coach Tina Deese said. "She gives us depth we need. She threw well in both games."
Petrie pitched six and one-third innings versus Akron, striking out four while giving up four hits. Auburn scored three runs on four hits in the third inning. Ashley Moore doubled to left field to score Marcella Passarelli from third, followed by a RBI-single by Sarah Orozco to score Moore, who went 2-for-3 for the game. Orozco scored on later in the inning on a double-steal. Michelle Martin added a RBI-double in the fifth inning.
Petrie came in in relief in the fourth inning of the win over Indiana (2-11), allowing one hits while striking out two. Jen Lofton pitched the final two innings to get the save, her fourth of the season and second of the day.
Jodie Van Ooyen had a two-RBI single in the first inning versus Indiana. Auburn added two runs in the fifth inning on RBI-singles by Jen Kraemer and Petrie. The Tigers tacked on another run in the sixth inning on a fielder's choice by Moore to plate pinch-runner Jen Hammock.
Van Ooyen went 2-for-3 to pace Auburn, while Trisha Boyd went 2-for-3 with two RBI for Indiana.
In other War Eagle Classic games, Creighton downed Miami-Ohio 8-3, Indiana 3-1, and Akron 3-2. Saturday's games were cancelled due to rain.
Auburn travels to Louisiana this weekend, playing at LSU Friday and Saturday and at Southeasten Louisiana next Monday.
