INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- 12-time All-American Rada Owen became the first female Auburn swimmer to make the U.S. Olympic team. The Chesterfield, Va. native finished second in the 200m free with a time of 2:00.54 to become the second AU swimmer to make the 2000 U.S. Olympic swim team. She is the tenth Auburn swimmer to qualify for the Olympics overall.
Sophomore Maggie Bowen and senior Jeff Somensatto both fell short of making the Olympic team as the two finished third in their respective events. Bowen swam the 200IM in 2:15.10, while Somensatto finished with a time of 1:58.07 in the 200 fly.
Former AU standout and '96 Olympian Scott Tucker advanced to the finals in the 100m free as he placed fifth in the semifinals with a time of 49.39. AU senior Greg Busse finished 14th with a time of 50.37 to miss the finals. The finals in this event will be held on Sunday.
In the men's 200m breaststroke semi-finals, Dave Denniston finished ninth with a time of 2:17.51 while sophomore Justin Caron finished 10th with a time of 2:17.79.
Owen joins fellow AU swimmer Pat Calhoun who qualified in the 100m breast on Thursday. The top two finishers for each event will make the Olympic Team while alternates and coaches will be selected following the meet.
