INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- The Olympic Trials came to an end for Auburn swimmers as four swimmers failed to make the team on their final night. In the 50 free, Bill Pilczuk was the highest finisher for Auburn Aquatics as he swam a career best 22.21 for a fourth place finish while former AU standout Aaron Ciarla finished seventh with a time of 22.55 and Christian Hasbach finished eighth with a time of 22.81.
In the 100m fly, Jeff Somensatto moved up from his eighth-place finish in the semi-finals as he swam 53.89 for a sixth-place finish in the finals. Somensatto finished third in the 200m fly earlier in the meet.
Auburn will have a total of three representatives on the US team: Pat Calhoun-100m breast; Rada Owen-200m free; and Scott Tucker-relay. There are also five AU representatives on international teams. They include Brett Hawke-Australia; Oswaldo Quevedo-Venezuela; Nick Shackell-Great Britain; Romain Barnier-France and Yoav Bruck-Isreal.
Calhoun is one of seven teenagers to make the 2000 team. In '96, there was only one teenager on the team.
Another highlight for Auburn at the trials was senior Dave Denniston when he set an American record in the 50m breast. His lead off split was 28.23 and he set the record on Aug. 9.
Coaches for the US Olympic Team will be named on Wed. following the meet. AU head coach David Marsh served as an assistant on the '96 team.
