SACRAMENTO, Calif.- Former Auburn sprinter Coby Miller made the United States Track and Field
Olympic team in the 200-meters after finishing third in the event at the U.S. Track and Field
Championships at Cal. State-Sacramento's Hornet Stadium Sunday.
Miller clocked a personal best time of 19.96 to take third behind John Capel and Floyd
Heard who finished with times of 19.85 and 19.88 respectively. The top three finishers in each
event at the trials made the U.S. team that will compete in the Olympics in Sydney, Australia in
September.
Miller, who concluded his Auburn career this spring, won the 1999 NCAA Indoor Championship
in the 200m and earned 10 All-America honors during his time with the Tigers. He holds the school
indoor and outdoor records in the 200m.
Miller became the 17th track and field athlete from Auburn to qualify for the Olympic
Games.
Two other athletes with Auburn ties also competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Current
Auburn track athlete Reedus Thurmond advanced to the finals of the discus and finished 11th with a
throw of 186'-11". A two-time All-American, Thurmond was one of only two current college athletes
to make the final of the event.
Auburn assistant track and field coach Rachel Sauder was 16th in the 10,000m with a time of
33:40.39. Sauder earned seven All-America honors while competing for Auburn from 1992-96.
Several other current and former Auburn track and field athletes will also be competing to
make the 2000 Olympics for their respective countries later this summer. The list includes 1996
Olympians Samuel Matete (Zambia), Juliet Campbell and Lacena Golding (Jamaica) and Victor Houston
(Barbados) and 2000 NCAA Champions Avard Moncur (Bahamas) and Vonette Dixon (Jamaica).
