Auburn Sends Eight Track And Field Athletes To 2000 Olympics

AUBURN- Auburn University's track and field program is sending eight either past or present members to the 2000 Summer Olympic games in Sydney, Australia.

Heading the list are three current Tigers. Both of Auburn's 2000 NCAA Individual Champions, Avard Moncur and Gabor Mate made the teams of their countries. Moncur, the 400m NCAA champion, won the 400m trials in Jamaica, while Mate, the two-time NCAA discus champion, finished second in the four-meet trials in Hungary.

Coby Miller, a NCAA Champion and 10-time All-American for the Tigers from 1998 to 2000, finished third in the United States trials in the 200m and is the first Auburn athlete since Brian Abshire in 1988 to represent the U.S. in the Olympics.

Sanjay Ayre, the 2000 SEC Indoor Champion in the 400m, placed fifth in the 400m dash for Jamaica and likely run on the 4X400m relay team. He will join former Tigers Juliet Campbell and Lacena Golding on the Jamaica Olympic team.

Campbell, a seven-time All-American for the Tigers in 1992 and 1993, placed second in the 200m dash in the trials and will be going to her third Olympic games. Golding, a four-time All-American in 1997 and 1998, was second in the long jump as is going to her second games. Campbell and Golding combined to hold nine records at Auburn, including Golding's indoor and outdoor long jump marks and Campbell's indoor and outdoor 100m and 200m sprints.

Past Auburn stars Samuel Matete and Victor Houston will be also going to Sydney in September. Matete is going to his third Olympics representing Zambia in the 400m hurdles and Houston will represent Barbados for the second straight games in the 400m hurdles.

The eight athletes mark the most Auburn track and field representatives at an Olympic in the schools history. The previous most was four athletes in 1984, 1992 and 1996.
