FT. COLLINS, Col.- Auburn played their second match of the University
Park Holiday Inn Classic today against the University of
California-Santa Barbara. Intent on taking a match win from the Lady
Gauchos for their first win of the tournament, the Tigers were unable to
hold off the Gauchos, losing the match with game scores of 15-10, 16-14
and 15-5.
Auburn Head Coach Kevin Renshler says about the game, "We were in the
position to win and we need to find the mind set to play like champions
and play to win. We got to a point where we were leading and we played
not to lose. That was the difference between us and Santa Barbara."
The Tigers started out the first game of the their match against the
Gauchos of California-Santa Barbara by taking an early lead of 3-0.
However, the Gauchos battled back, bringing the score to a 7-4 lead
going into the first time out. Auburn turned up the heat on the
offense, with six kills by Brooke McCarley and five by Melanie Wille,
bringing the score to a 10-10 tie. With the game point on the line at a
score of 14-10, the Tigers fought to keep the Gauchos off, but
ultimately fell by a score of 15-10.
Entering the second game of the match, the Tigers fell behind early on
with the Gauchos scoring four unanswered points. Auburn came back,
breaking a 4-4 tie with a kill by senior Jaunelle Hamilton. Taking
advantage of their momentum, the Tigers went on the prowl for their
first game win of the match, running up the score to 12-4 in their
favor. The Gauchos fought back, bringing the game to a 14-14 tie.
Unable to hold off the Gauchos, the Tigers lost their second game of the
match by a score of 16-14.
Auburn went into the third game fighting to keep California-Santa
Barbara from taking the match victory. The Tigers tried to keep the
Gauchos at bay, coming within three points of Santa Barbara's lead.
However, the Gauchos came away with the game win with a score of 15-5,
and sealed their match victory.
The Tigers finished out the match with team blocks of nine compared to
Santa Barbara's 10 and a half. Traci Price led the Tigers in assists
with 30, while Brooke McCarley had the most kills, with 11.
Auburn will next face the Drake University Bulldogs today at 5:30 p.m.
for its final match of the University Park Holiday Inn Tournament.
