August 22, 2000

BAD SAAROW, Germany- Auburn sophomore All-American golfer Celeste Troche will represent her native Paraguay in the 2000 Women's World Amateur Team Championship Wednesday through Saturday at the Sporting Club Berlin in Bad Saarow, Germany.

First conducted in 1964, the 19th annual event is contested over four rounds of stroke play that counts the two lowest scores per three-member team each day. The biennial event brings together international teams of women amateur golfers to compete for the Espirito Santo Trophy. Thirty-three teams competed in 1998 in Santiago, Chile.

"I am very excited about playing in the World Team Championship," Troche said. "It is a huge honor, and I look forward to competing. I have had a wonderful summer playing golf and this will be a perfect ending to it. It will be a big boost for my college season playing in a competitive event like this."

Troche, a native of Asuncion, Paraguay, was the 2000 SEC Freshman of the Year with a team-best 75.12 stroke average, won her first major women's amateur title at the 70th Trans-National Championship in July by defeating Curtis Cup Champion Brenda Corrie Kuehn 5-and-4 in the 36-hole match. She carded eight top-10 finishes in 11 tournaments as a Tiger freshman, including four top-five finishes.

The three-member United States team consists of Stanford seniors Stephanie Keever and Hilary Homeyer and Arizona sophomore Laura Myerscough. The United States team has won the women's championship 13 times, most recently in 1998 when the U.S. set a scoring record of 558 for 72 holes.
