BAD SAAROW, Germany- Auburn sophomore All-American Celeste Troche fired a 3-over 75 for her native Paraguay and is tied for 29th after the first round of the 2000 Women's World Amateur Team Championship at the par-72, 5626-yard Sporting Club Berlin in Bad Saarow, Germany, Wednesday.
Paraguay is tied for 25th in the 40-country field with an 11-over 155, 13 shots behind tournament-leading Denmark. The top two scores of the three member teams count towards the team score. Troche's 75 led Paraguay as her teammates Maria Rocio Rocio and Julieta Granada shot a pair of 80s.
"I am pretty pleased with the way that I played," Troche said. "I played the back nine even par so that is something that will give me a lift going into the next round."
Troche had two birdies and five bogeys in her round with birdies on the par-5 10th hole and the par-4 16th. She bogeyed the par-3 third hole, par-4 fourth, par-4 seventh, par-4 15th and par-4 18th.
The United States is tied for 21st with an 8-over 152, three shots ahead of Paraguay and 10 behind Denmark. Stanford senior Stephanie Keever is tied with Troche with a 75 while Stanford senior Hilary Homeyer shot a 77 and Arizona sophomore Laura Myerscough a 79.
Korea is in second at 144 followed by Sweden (145), Italy (146), New Zealand (146), Japan (146), France (146), Norway (147) and Brazil (147). Spain, Mexico, Great Britain & Ireland, Germany, Belgium and Australia are tied for 10th at 148.
Norway's Suzann Pettersen and Switzerland's Niloufar Azam are tied for the individual lead at 69 in the 120-player field. The four round tournament runs through Saturday.
