AUBURN- The fifth-ranked Auburn women's golf team took home first place in the seventh annual AU Tiger-Derby Invitational for the first time since the tournament's inaugural year in 1994 after shooting a 304 Sunday at the par-72, 6142-yard Auburn University Club Course.
After leading for the first 51 of the 54 holes played in the tournament, Auburn junior Courtney Swaim dropped to second place by shooting a 76 in Sunday's final round finishing three strokes behind individual champion Lina Thoren of Mississippi State. After taking a penalty stroke for an unplayable lie following her drive on the par-5 #16, Swaim could only manage a double-bogey while Thoren sank a 20-foot birdie putt on the same hole to take the lead which she held onto for the remaining two holes.
Finishing just one shot behind Swaim and coming in at third-place was Auburn sophomore Celeste Troche, who fired a 75 in the final round to finish at 221 for the tournament.
The Tigers finished with an 894 total to win by 15 strokes. Mississippi State, who was previously third, shot a 303 to jump ahead of Central Florida and take second place. Following third-place Central Florida, who shot a 911 for the tourney, was LSU and Vanderbilt at 913, Alabama (930), Florida State (935), UNC-Wilmington (937), South Florida (938), Ole Miss and Tulane (942) and Georgia State (1001).
Sophomore Danielle Downey fired a 74 in the final round to finish at 225 and in a tie for fifth place, while freshman Diana Ramage, who was playing in the tournament as an individual, shot a final-round 73 to finish at 228 and in a tie for 13th place. Just behind Ramage was sophomore Anne Hutto who finished with a 229 total and in a tie for 18th place. Junior Kimberly Strong was 30th at 235 while senior Crystal Ferrier, also playing in the tournament as an individual, finished up with a 257.
"This is a great way to start the season, and it is certainly thrilling for all of us to be able to win our own tournament," Auburn head coach Kim Evans said. "I was extremely happy with the way Courtney (Swaim) and Celeste (Troche) finished up individually in the tournament. Overall, everything went well and it was a great experience for everyone who participated."
Next up for the Auburn Tiger women's golf team is the NCAA Fall Preview at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., September 15-17.
