GAINESVILLE, FL.- The 12th-ranked Auburn women's golf team shot a 300-309-312-921 to finish fourth out of 15 teams in the 2000 SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational at the par-72, 5,829-yard University Golf Club on Sunday. The Auburn Tigers dropped to fourth place after holding first place during the first and second rounds.
Sophomore Courtney Swaim fired an eight-over 76 to finish sixth in the 28th Annual SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational. Freshman Celeste Troche finished 11th with a 74-77-77-228 while senior Kami Smith tied for 27th at 75-80-79-234. Freshman Danielle Downey tied 31st with 77-79-80-236, and freshman Kimberly Strong shot a 82-79-80-241 to finish in 52nd place. Junior Crystal Ferrier finished the tournament in 79th place with a 82-88-89-259.
Auburn was in first going into the final round, but fell to fourth place with the host team, University of Florida, claiming first with a score of 306-309-289-904. The South Carolina Gamecocks finished 15 shots behind Florida, while LSU finished in third.
"This tournament was a good experience for our team," said head coach Kim Evans. "I am proud of the way that we played, but I wish that we could have held the lead in the final round. This tournament had a lot of competitive teams that came to play hard. We just wanted to take what we have learned from this tournament and use it to improve our play in future tournaments."
Auburn returns to action at the Casa de Campo in La Romana, Dominican Republic, March 8-12.
