AUBURN- The 48th ranked Auburn women's tennis team fell to 16th ranked Vanderbilt, 6-3, Thursday afternoon at the Luther Young Tennis Center. The Tigers dropped to 4-7 on the season and 0-2 in the SEC, while the Commodores improve to 13-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play.
"We battled them right to the end today," Auburn head coach Troy Porco said. "We had tremendous wins from Simone (Jardim) and Lucy (Altman) in both singles and doubles. We just need to keep fighting and good things will come our way."
In singles action, Auburn won upset matches by Simone Jardim and Lucy Altman. Jardim, unranked, defeated No. 73 Kristy Blumberg in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5. Altman, also unranked, defeated No. 97 Jenny Miller after losing the first set to win 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
In doubles, Auburn's only point came on court two by Jardim and Altman. The duo, ranked 27th nationally, defeated 30th ranked Julie Ditty and Sarah Riske. Altman is now tied for seventh on Auburn's all-time career doubles list with 40.
The Tigers return to action on Friday, March 17 at 4 p.m. against Kentucky at the Luther Young Tennis Center. Admission to the match is free.
