# Snowboard Kids: Recompiled A native Windows and Linux port of **Snowboard Kids (USA)**, powered by [N64Recomp](https://github.com/N64Recomp/N64Recomp) and [RT64](https://github.com/rt64/rt64). **Version 1.1.0** · [Releases](https://github.com/boricuapab/snowboardkids-recompiled/releases) · [Mods](https://github.com/boricuapab/snowboardkids-recompiled-mods) This repository and its game releases contain no ROM, extracted gameplay assets, custom texture packs, or save data. Supply your own unmodified USA ROM when launching the game. The launcher splash artwork is included; gameplay assets are loaded from your ROM. ## Getting started 1. Download the Windows or Linux ZIP from Releases and extract it. 2. Run `SnowboardKidsRecompiled.exe` on Windows or `SnowboardKidsRecompiled` on Linux. 3. Select your USA ROM in the launcher, or drag the ROM onto the launcher window. 4. Choose **Settings** for graphics, controls, and optional mods, then start the game. The launcher accepts `.z64`, `.v64`, and `.n64` byte orders. The canonical big-endian USA ROM SHA-1 is `1583bacc9046a360df8ea4d536942155247e154c`. ## Features - Native ROM-selection launcher with remembered ROM location. - Selectable Off/2×/4×/8× MSAA and internal resolution scaling (2× by default; no Expansion Pak needed). - Original 4:3, widescreen 16:9, or window-matched aspect ratio. - Original, 60 FPS, 120 FPS, or display-refresh rendering targets. - Keyboard and controller remapping, including stick/trigger deadzone adjustment. - Controller Pak emulation and persistent saves. - Optional native recomp code mods and RT64 texture replacement support. Higher frame rates interpolate rendering; game logic and audio keep their original speed. The intro uses the selected aspect ratio and rendering rate while preserving its cinematic top/bottom reveal. A suitable high-refresh display is required to see higher output rates. ## Requirements **Windows:** x64 Windows 10/11, an SSE4.1-capable CPU, a Direct3D 12-capable GPU, current graphics drivers, and the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015–2022 x64 runtime. **Linux:** x86-64 with SSE4.1 and Vulkan support. The release is built on Ubuntu 24.04; older distributions may require building from source. SDL2, GTK 3, zlib, and the normal system graphics/audio libraries are required. On Ubuntu 24.04, install `libsdl2-2.0-0 libgtk-3-0t64 libvulkan1` through your package manager. ## Controls and saves Configure keyboard and controller bindings in **Settings** before starting. Escape exits the game; Alt+Enter toggles fullscreen. Launcher settings and ROM selection are stored in the platform application-preferences directory. The launcher keeps a save directory with the selected ROM configuration. For command-line launches, a ROM inside a directory named `rom` uses a sibling `userdata` directory; otherwise the command-line fallback is `userdata` in the working directory. Controller Pak data is stored as `saves/controller-1.mpk` within the selected save directory. ## Mods Mods are maintained in the [separate mods repository](https://github.com/boricuapab/snowboardkids-recompiled-mods). Its release contains a ZIP with a `mods` directory. Place that directory beside the game executable, then enable packages in **Settings → Mods**. No mod files or texture images are included in this game's releases. The current launcher exposes independent switches for the course and character HD packs, ninja unlock, course unlock, board unlock, and infinite-money mods. It is not a general-purpose third-party mod browser. Unlocks and money may be recorded by the game's normal save system. ## Building See [BUILDING.md](BUILDING.md). Generated game code and the ROM used to generate it remain local and are excluded from Git. Dependencies are pinned as Git submodules, and the required runtime fixes are provided as a patch. ## Known limitations - USA ROM only. - The included controller integration currently exposes one controller port. - High-frame-rate and widescreen behavior is subject to the original game's rendering conventions; full-screen fades and intro scissors expand to the selected aspect ratio. - Linux releases target Ubuntu 24.04-era system libraries, not a self-contained AppImage. ## Credits and license - [Snowboard Kids decompilation](https://github.com/cdlewis/snowboardkids-decomp): reverse-engineered function and data symbols. - [N64Recomp](https://github.com/N64Recomp/N64Recomp) and [N64ModernRuntime](https://github.com/N64Recomp/N64ModernRuntime): native recompilation, platform runtime, and mod support. - [RT64](https://github.com/rt64/rt64): rendering and texture replacement. - [Snowboard Kids 2: Recompiled](https://github.com/cdlewis/snowboardkids2-recomp) and its [mod template](https://github.com/cdlewis/snowboardkids2-recomp-mod-template): reference projects. - SDL2, Dear ImGui, nativefiledialog-extended, and the dependencies included by the projects above.
