Mobile-only account opening, introduced in 2019, gave customers branch-free access before pandemic restrictions made remote banking essential. The model was designed for self-service rather than crisis response, embedding digital acquisition within a wider transformation of customer and internal operations.

Friction was reduced through proportionate data capture, early collection of contact details and resumable applications supported by reference numbers. Electronic identity verification, selfie liveness checks and app-based activation enabled customers to progress from application to transaction within a single mobile environment.

Safeguards evolved alongside speed. Device and IP-address checks, duplicate-face screening, restrictions on temporary email services and internal and external watchlists help identify potentially fraudulent applications. Cases presenting anomalies are routed for human review, with accounts opened only after required controls are completed. This hybrid approach shows that customer convenience has been balanced with accountable compliance judgement.

From debit and savings accounts, digital onboarding has expanded to credit cards, personal loans, investments and payroll accounts. Payroll customers can open accounts directly through the app using an employer code, reducing reliance on manual HR processes. The bank has also used the capability to support investment access through the BSP's PERA initiative and is extending it towards corporate and MSME requirements. By 2025, around 5.5 million customers had been onboarded digitally across products.

Consolidation of onboarding channels and consideration of future agent-led customer journeys indicate a measured approach to scale, cost and changing technology. The Capital Finance International (CFI.co) Judging Panel congratulates Union Bank of the Philippines on winning the Digital Onboarding Excellence Champion 2026 Award (Southeast Asia).
