African private equity's liquidity shortage has made realised exits and secondary solutions a sharper test of manager discipline than fundraising ambition alone. Sango Capital's alternatives platform, spanning primary fund commitments to private equity, venture capital and private credit funds, secondaries, co-investments and direct holdings, is built to manage risks that conventional capital often avoids.
The past 12 months were described as the firm's strongest liquidity period to date, including IPOs, strategic sales and direct realisations. Examples included a Moroccan listing, co-invested with DPI and described in the interview as the country's most successful IPO in 30 years, alongside a successful Nigerian IPO.
Secondary execution adds weight to that record. Sango supported investor-interest aggregations in a Nigerian private equity fund and a West African technology fund, and completed a continuation vehicle for residual assets from its first fund. That structure provided liquidity to existing investors while bringing new European limited-partner capital into African private markets, in what the firm describes as a first of its kind for the region.
A reported $120m multi-manager secondary acquisition across four African funds further illustrates the firm's role in creating price discovery and exit pathways where global secondary capital can remain limited. These transactions reflect control, alignment and practical ecosystem-building rather than passive exposure.
Operational judgement is visible in the South African packaging platform. Sango sourced a combined heat and power plant from Europe, acquired it at a fraction of replacement cost, and installed it at a paper mill where energy cost and reliability were central risks. Portfolio examples also show Africa-origin businesses scaling outward, into the Middle East and the US. The Capital Finance International (CFI.co) Judging Panel congratulates Sango Capital on winning the Leader in African Mid-Market Private Equity 2026 Award (Africa).
