# Introducing Muse Glimmer: An Open Agentic Model That Runs on Your Device **Subtitle:** Meta’s 30B dense multimodal agent — Apache 2.0, under ~20 GB quantized, trained for tool loops and failure recovery — plus a hands-on local lab. **Tags:** `Meta` · `Muse Glimmer` · `Local Agents` · `Open Weights` · `Multimodal` · `On-Device AI` --- For years, “run an agent” quietly meant *rent a frontier model and ship every file, email, and shell log to someone else’s GPU*. That works — until it doesn’t: - **Privacy** — legal docs, medical notes, source trees, home automation. - **Cost** — multi-step tool loops multiply tokens. - **Latency** — every thought is a cross-region RTT. - **Agency** — you want something *always on*, not always billing. On **10 August 2026**, Meta Superintelligence Labs answered with a clear product thesis: > **Muse Glimmer** — an open-weight **30-billion-parameter** model optimized for **always-on local agent workflows**. Weights: [Hugging Face `meta-models/Muse-Glimmer-30B`](https://huggingface.co/meta-models/Muse-Glimmer-30B) Research: [Introducing Muse Glimmer](https://research.meta.ai/blog/introducing-muse-glimmer-open-agentic-model) Day-0 ecosystem: [Hugging Face blog](https://huggingface.co/blog/muse-glimmer) This post is the practitioner’s cut: what it is, why the design point is different, how the numbers look, and how to *feel* the agent story in the companion lab in this repo. --- ## The pitch in one table | Dimension | Muse Glimmer | |-----------|----------------| | **Size** | Dense **30B** (≈2B perception encoder + ≈28B text decoder) | | **License** | **Apache 2.0** (permissive open weights) | | **Modalities** | Text + images + video frames (interleaved) | | **Languages** | 100+ | | **Local footprint** | Full precision ≳55 GB; **~4-bit LM ≲20 GB** | | **Target box** | Mac / PC with performant GPU or large unified memory (24–32 GB class) | | **Agent DNA** | Function calling, long-horizon tasks, **failure recovery** | | **Knobs** | Controllable **reasoning strength**; optional **DFlash** speculative drafter | | **Stack glue** | OpenAI-compatible serving; OpenClaw and other scaffolds | This is not “another 30B chatbot.” It is a **local agent runtime target** with a multimodal eye and a training emphasis on finishing work when tools misbehave. --- ## Why “agentic” is doing real work in the name Chat models complete strings. **Agents complete jobs.** A job looks like: ```text goal → plan → tool → observe → (tool failed?) diagnose + retry → tool → write artifact → verify → stop ``` Meta’s launch messaging is unusually explicit that **failure recovery was a deliberate training target**: when a tool returns 401, empty JSON, or nonsense, the model is pushed to **diagnose and retry** rather than halt or hallucinate success. That is the difference between a demo GIF and something you leave running next to Home Assistant, your monorepo, or a private RAG corpus. Launch demos include the full arc: discover a local Home Assistant, query devices, generate a dashboard, serve it, verify — **from a single natural-language prompt**. The lab in this repo replays that *shape* of loop offline so you can teach or sell the idea without a 30B download first. --- ## The memory story (why 30B can still be “on your device”) Raw 30B weights at full precision are a non-starter for most people (**55+ GB**). The local product only works if compression is first-class: 1. **~4-bit quantization** brings the language model under roughly **20 GB**. 2. That leaves headroom in a **24–32 GB** envelope for: - KV cache - Perception encoder - Optional **DFlash** drafter - The agent process itself Meta reports **minimal to no degradation on agentic tasks** under that compression regime (per their public notes). The lab’s **Memory** tab is a teaching calculator for that envelope — not a profiler, but a way to internalize the tradeoffs (bits × context × vision × drafter). **Takeaway:** “On-device 30B” is a *system* claim (quant + cache + optional draft model), not a claim that FP16 30B fits in 16 GB. --- ## Architecture worth remembering From the Hugging Face day-0 writeup: ### Perception Encoder (~2B) - ViT-style **Perception Encoder** (Meta’s PE line) for images and video frames - Shared path for stills and timestamped video placeholders - Pixel-shuffle style token reduction before projection into the language space ### Text decoder (~28B) - **52 layers** with a repeating **(SWA, SWA, SWA, Full)** attention pattern - Sliding window **2048** with RoPE on local layers; **NoPE** full-attention layers for global mixing - **Gated GQA** — 16 query heads per KV head (leaner KV cache) - **Q-K normalization** + query scaling for stable attention logits ### DFlash speculative decoding (optional) - Lightweight **block-diffusion drafter** proposes token blocks; the main model verifies in parallel - Same outputs when accepted; especially helpful for **structured / coding** generation - Supported day-0 in transformers and llama.cpp If you only remember three letters after the param count: **PE + SWA/Full + DFlash**. --- ## Benchmarks: where it flexes Published comparisons (high reasoning) against **Gemma4-31B Thinking** and **Qwen3.6-27B Thinking** show Muse Glimmer especially strong on **general agentic** suites: | Benchmark | Muse Glimmer-30B | Gemma4-31B | Qwen3.6-27B | |-----------|-----------------:|-----------:|------------:| | MCP Atlas | **75.5** | 54.2 | 62.5 | | DeepSearch QA | **74.6** | 61.7 | 71.1 | | τ³-Banking | **23.5** | 15.1 | 16.7 | | WildClawBench | **47.6** | 37.6 | 43.2 | | GAIA2 | **43.3** | 36.4 | 40.0 | | SWE-Bench Pro | **51.2** | 36.9 | 50.2 | | SciCode | **43.6** | 43.4 | 39.8 | | Charxiv Reasoning | **78.8** | 77.7 | 78.4 | | IFBench | **77.0** | 76.0 | 70.8 | | AIME 2026 | **94.7** | 89.2 | 94.1 | | AA-LCR | **80.0** | 68.3 | 73.3 | Source: [Hugging Face Muse Glimmer blog](https://huggingface.co/blog/muse-glimmer) (scores as published). **How to read this without hype:** - **Agent harnesses** (MCP Atlas, DeepSearch, WildClaw, τ³) are the headline — that matches the product story. - **Coding** is competitive (SWE-Bench Pro lead in this table; Verified/TerminalBench still contested with Qwen). - **Multimodal** is in the pack, not a free blowout. - Safety tables exist separately; agent utility vs attack success is a real trade space — read the full HF table if you ship tools with side effects. The lab’s **Benchmarks** tab graphs these rows so stakeholders can *see* the agentic skew without a PDF. --- ## Controllable reasoning: quality is a dial, not a religion Local agents cannot always afford “think forever.” Muse Glimmer exposes **reasoning strength** (e.g. low / medium / high in processor APIs) so you can: - **Low** — snappy UI answers, simple tool picks - **High** — architecture tradeoffs, long plans, careful recovery The lab includes a side-by-side fixture: same sharding question, low vs high — same core recommendation, different production caveats. That is the product intuition: **latency budget is part of agent UX**. --- ## Ecosystem: day-0 paths that matter You do not need a research cluster to start: | Goal | Path | |------|------| | Download | [HF weights](https://huggingface.co/meta-models/Muse-Glimmer-30B) | | Laptop GGUF | [meta GGUF](https://huggingface.co/meta-models/Muse-Glimmer-30B-GGUF), [Unsloth GGUF](https://huggingface.co/unsloth/Muse-Glimmer-30B-GGUF) | | Python | `transformers` `AutoModelForMultimodalLM` + `AutoProcessor` | | Local server | `llama serve -hf meta-models/Muse-Glimmer-30B-GGUF` | | Scale out | vLLM (transformers backend), SGLang | | Hosted | HF Inference Endpoints, Together, Fireworks, OpenRouter | | Agent harness | OpenClaw (OpenAI-compatible `/v1`), Hermes-like setups, your own tool loop | | Fine-tune | TRL (SFT / GRPO notes in HF blog); TorchTitan called out by Meta | Hugging Face’s post also leans into a delightful meta-use case: **“Hey Muse Glimmer, quantize / deploy / optimize yourself”** via MCP + agent skills — the model as operator of its own serving stack. That is the culture signal: **local agents that act on the Hub and the machine**, not only complete chat bubbles. --- ## Open weights vs “open source” (say it cleanly) Apache 2.0 on the **weights** is a big deal for commercial and OSS product builders — more permissive than several earlier Llama-era terms. Still precise language: - **Open weights** — you can download, run, fine-tune, and (under the license) redistribute the parameters. - **Not a full reproducible science release** unless training data and full stack are also open (Meta’s training corpus is not a public “rebuild from scratch” kit). For most agent product teams, **weights + license + day-0 runtimes** is the unlock. For academics auditing data provenance, keep expectations calibrated. --- ## What to build with it this week Ideas that match the design point: 1. **Private coding agent** on a workstation — repo never leaves the LAN. 2. **Home / lab ops agent** — Home Assistant, printers, cameras, local HTTP APIs. 3. **Document desk** — contracts and PDFs with multimodal page understanding. 4. **On-prem MCP worker** — tools as local processes; model as planner. 5. **Eval judge** — LLM-as-judge on sensitive transcripts without a cloud DPA fight. If the data plane is local and the control plane is tools, Muse Glimmer is in distribution. --- ## Companion lab (this repository) ```bash cd demos/muse-glimmer ./run.sh # → http://127.0.0.1:7870 ``` | Lab surface | Purpose | |-------------|---------| | Agent loops | Feel recovery, tools, multimodal, reasoning A/B | | Benchmarks | Interactive published comparisons | | Memory | Envelope intuition for 24–32 GB devices | | Live chat | Optional wire-up to *your* OpenAI-compatible Muse endpoint | Offline by default. GPU optional. Story-first, then silicon. --- ## Closing The industry spent two years proving that **agents in the cloud** can book flights and refactor repos. The next proof is harder and more personal: > Can a **serious** agent live **next to your files**, under a **permissive license**, on **hardware you already own**, and still finish multi-step work when the tools lie? **Muse Glimmer** is Meta’s open bet that the answer is yes — at 30B, with eyes, with recovery, with a quant story that fits a high-end laptop or single GPU. Download the weights. Point an agent harness at localhost. Keep the data home. And if you want the narrative interactive before the download finishes — run the lab in this repo. --- ### Primary links - [Meta research blog](https://research.meta.ai/blog/introducing-muse-glimmer-open-agentic-model) - [Hugging Face model](https://huggingface.co/meta-models/Muse-Glimmer-30B) - [Hugging Face ecosystem guide](https://huggingface.co/blog/muse-glimmer) - [Developer resources](https://developer.meta.com/ai/models/muse-glimmer/) *Independent educational companion — not affiliated with Meta.
