I dunno, I think it's a bit silly to try and rationalize magic, I think
it could be just as realistic to have 'good' or 'white' magic for
healing/buffs/etc which simply isn't resistable because ... well ... it's
magic, and 'dark' magic, like burns, dots, etc which could be resisted
because ... it's magic :^)

<asbestos>

As long as we're trying to rationalize magic, I'm going to get *very*
silly and contraversial:
I see no evidence of a concept of magic resistance in 'real life' (ie
religion, witchcraft, etc - assuming such things were real), and thus think
that resisting 'good magic' is unrealistic, for example:

A priest tries to baptise you, but you RESIST!
You attempt to reincarnate as a cow, but you RESIST!
Jesus attempts to heal a leper, but the leper RESISTS!
Jim Baker attempts to lay hands on an audience member, but the audience
member RESISTS!
Jesus attempts to resurrect himself, but he RESISTS!

</asbestos>

In all, this has nothing to do with realism, but game balance. After
all, on the whole, the land of norrath is far from realistic.
