We do this all the time. If someone is taking the brunt of
the damage and everyone else is taking little to none, then I
tell them to stop attacking until the mob changes targets.
(For some reason, warriors seem to be the best at ignoring you
when you say this. :)

The problem is it happens much too often and too easily with
bards.
