I have that whole PvP problem, so you have to be careful of big bad Teir Dal
Wizards warping in when they hear a wood elf BARD is tearing up their
guards. But I plan on spending quite a lot of time there at higher levels
guard hunting.

Heh heh. I have stepped foot into Neriak, and lived. A
friend was trying to guide me to Lavastorm via /tells and got
left and right mixed up and took me straight into Neriak (the
directions are virtually identical - hug the wall, cross the
river, entrance is shortly after the terrain turns to rock).
I zoned into East Commonlands with a bubble of life and
probably a train of 4-5 Nektulos guards behind me.
Fortunately, most don't hit for 80-100 points like the "good"
guards).
Nektulos itself isn't that bad for a bard. Stick to the walls
and you can outrun most anything. Lavastorm is well worth
visiting in the L12-18 range. Just make sure you bring a
healer (and no, your healing song will not cut it).
