Heh, I'm a few posts behind you. :-)
I did do this without safe fall, but you're right, it can be painful (hence
throwing in the Hymn). However, there is a side of the island which doesn't
slope as severely. I usually ran across this area and turned "up" a steep
area, then ran across and came "down" a flatter area.
Every now and then I would try a Chains, but it it fails, you're toast.
