I agree. In a pickup group, everyone puts forth the effort to
kill the creature that drops an item, and as a result should have the
right to rand for it.

Then you've never seen a good guild. My guild has had 4 people
out of about 80 to 100 leave for other guilds. A bunch of my guildmates
have retired from EQ, but obviously that's not the same thing. The
Pantheon has similar numbers (Sylly?). I heavily urge you to read
Gallenite/Jarik's treatise on looting:
