Heh...it was CTRL-casting (shoulda said that...sorry :)...till they changed it for everyone on the patch to be ALT-casting only (try it, CTRL-# won't work :)...buuuut..you can go into your keyboard assignments in-game and set up the CTRL-# for the secondary key for the casting.

Casting the spells from the spell gems by using the keyboard
(instead of moving the gems to the hotkeys, you can use ALT-1 to
cast the spell in the first spell slot...all the way through
ALT-8). It used to not work for bards, and when you used it, it
also tried actiivating the item/social/spell in that number
hotkey...both problems are fixed now : )
