You can fill your main inv slots with things to force auto-loot to put the
item into a container slot. Then position a backpack or other container on
your hot key pad and click it open for wep/instrument switches.

I generally move the looted item to a container after auto-looting.

The other 'trick' would be using the range weapon slot to hold a wep - just
don't hit range wep and toss that dirk into a passing orc pawn! That's if
you don't carry actual range weps.
