The other three classes you mention can function for 9 levels without
spells. Their spells even after that are a nice flavor ability but really
do not increase their abilities in combat very much. dance of fireflies is
the perfect example. What 9th level ranger can't kill a fire beele with his
bare hands and pick up an eye? Why have the spell? for flavor, no other
reason. Bards need their spells to be effective and will not beat any of
the other 3 classes you call hybrids without them in a fight. In my mind
that clearly seperates us from those classes.

They are not hybrids, they are the priest classes. I do not know where this
notion came from that the cleric/druid/shamen class are hybrids. The hybrid
classes are Ranger (Warrior/Druid), Paladin (Warrior/Cleric), Shadow Knight
(Warrior/Necromancer), and Bard (Rogue?/Enchanter?/?).
