# Starter book provenance and rights

Leaf Reader includes four unmodified Standard Ebooks EPUB editions so a fresh installation has a useful offline shelf. The software is MIT licensed; the EPUB files in `starter-books/` are separate public-domain/CC0 materials and are not distributed under Leaf Reader's MIT license.

Standard Ebooks states that the entirety of each ebook file—including its markup, cover art, and other contributions—is dedicated to the public domain under [CC0 1.0](https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/). See the official [Standard Ebooks public-domain policy](https://standardebooks.org/about/standard-ebooks-and-the-public-domain). Each EPUB retains its embedded colophon and uncopyright notice. Standard Ebooks does not endorse Leaf Reader.

Standard Ebooks evaluates public-domain status for the United States. Users elsewhere remain responsible for checking their local copyright law.
