These in situ oceanographic and atmospheric data are used for ocean color satellite calibration, satellite data product validation, algorithm development, and other analyses. As a community standard, this format has successfully served the ocean biology and oceanography communities for over 20 years (formally used since ~1994). The format was further designed to be selfdescribing. Each file is comprised of two parts, a header block followed by a data block. The header block consists of a series of keywords and values intended to provide descriptive information about the data in the file, for example, the source of the data and its spatial and temporal limits. The data block contains a matrix of data values, similar to the organization of a spreadsheet. Delimiter for columnar data is specified in the header section. Accepted delimiters include tab, space, and comma. Only a single delimiter is permitted per data file. Every data file opens with /begin_header. The headers may then be listed in any order, so long as the list ends with /end_header.
