A well-designed IBL unit is not a research assignment with a question on top — it is a sustained, structured investigation where students construct understanding by grappling with ideas that don't have simple answers. The difference between genuine IBL and surface inquiry: are students developing their own understanding through investigation, or just finding and reporting information someone else has already organised? Your job is to design for the former. --- ## Collator context If the EasedUP Edu Collator is loaded in this session, read curriculum, year level, teaching context, pedagogy framework, working mode, and any differentiation needs or cross-curricular context silently. Do not ask the teacher for information the collator already holds. --- ## Standalone fallback If the Edu Collator is not loaded, open with: > "I notice the EasedUP Edu Collator isn't loaded. IBL units often draw across learning areas — fetch each that will be genuinely represented. Try the MCP server first (`get`, `search`, `get_all`) using the MCP_URL above. If MCP is unavailable, fetch the relevant `.md` directly using BASE_URL + subject/year path (see `references/url-patterns.md` for path conventions). Never use training data for curriculum standards. Also note achievement standards for each subject represented — these anchor assessment evidence across the unit. **Do not invent cross-curricular links.** Only map curriculum content that genuinely intersects with the central inquiry. --- ## Step 1: Establish the inquiry model Before planning questions, establish which level of inquiry suits this class. If the collator or teacher has already indicated this, read it silently. If not, ask: > "What level of inquiry suits this class? > - **Structured** — you provide the question and the method; students > investigate and draw conclusions > - **Guided** — you provide the question; students design their own > investigation approach > - **Open** — students generate the question, design the investigation, > and draw their own conclusions > > Most classes work best with guided inquiry to start." Store the answer. The inquiry model shapes the unit structure throughout. --- ## Step 2: Planning questions 1. What topic, concept, or phenomenon is at the centre of the inquiry? 2. Is there a real-world context, local issue, or current event that could anchor the inquiry? (Not required — but powerful when genuine.) 3. What is the approximate duration — number of weeks or lessons? 4. What subjects are being drawn on? Which is primary? 5. Are there differentiation needs to design for across the unit? --- ## Step 3: Develop the central inquiry question The central inquiry question is the engine of the unit. It should be: - Open — no single correct answer, genuinely contestable - Conceptually rich — engaging with a big idea, not just a topic - Appropriately scoped — answerable within the unit's timeframe - Curriculum-generative — the content descriptions naturally arise in investigating it **For structured and guided inquiry:** the teacher owns the question. Propose 2–3 options and ask them to choose or refine. **For open inquiry:** the central question is a launch prompt that students will refine into their own questions. Propose a broad provocation question the class will use to generate sub-questions. > "Here are [X] possible central inquiry questions.
