mon cher Theo, Merci de ta lettre d’hier. Moi pas non plus je ne peux pas ecrire comme je le voudrais mais enfin nous vivons dans une époque si agitée/ que d’avoir des opinions fermes assez pour juger des chôses il ne saurait être question. J’aurais bien voulu savoir si maintenant tu manges encore ensemble au restaurant ou que tu vis davantage chez toi. je l’espère car à la longue cela doit être le meilleur. Pour moi cela va bien – tu comprends qu’après maintenant bientôt un demi an de sobrieté absolue de manger/ boire/ fumer/ avec dans ces derniers temps deux bains de deux heures par semaine/ il est évident que cela doive beaucoup calmer_ Cela va donc fort bien et pour ce qui est du travail cela m’occupe et me distrait – ce dont j’ai grand besoin – bien loin de m’éreinter. Cela me fait grand plaisir qu’Isaacson aie trouvé des choses dans mon envoi qui lui plaisent. Lui et de Haan paraissent bien fidèles/ ce qui est rare assez par le temps qui court pour qu’il soit juste de l’apprécier. Et que/ ainsi que tu dis/ il s’en est trouvé un autre qui avait trouvé quelque chôse dans la figure de femme jaune et noir cela ne m’étonne pas quoique je crois que le mérite en est au modèle et non pas à ma peinture. Je desespère de jamais trouver des modèles_ ah si j’en avais de temps en temps de comme cela ou comme la femme qui a posé pour la berceuse/ je ferais bien autre chôse. Je trouve que tu aies bien fait de ne pas exposer des tableaux de moi à l’exposition de Gauguin et autres_ il y a une raison suffisante que je m’en abstienne sans les offenser tant que je ne suis pas moi-même guéri.– Il est indubitable pour moi que Gauguin et Bernard ont du grand et reel mérite_ Qu’à des êtres comme eux bien vivants et jeunes et qui doivent vivre et chercher à se frayer leur sentier/ il soit impossible de retourner toutes leurs toiles contre un mur jusqu’à qu’il plaise aux gens de les admettre dans quelque chôse/ dans le vinaigre officiel/ demeure pourtant fort compréhensible. En exposant dans les cafés on est cause de bruit/ qu’il est, je ne dis pas non, de mauvais gout de faire. mais moi et jusqu’à deux fois j’ai ce crime-là sur la conscience ayant exposé au Tambourin et à l’avenue de Clichy_ Sans compter le dérangement causé à 81 vertueux antropophages de la bonne ville d’Arles et à leur excellent maire. Donc dans tous les cas je suis pire et plus blamable qu’eux en tant que quant à cela (causer du bruit ma foi bien involontairement).– Le petit Bernard – pour moi – a déjà fait quelques toiles absolument étonnantes. où il y a une douceur et quelquechose d’essentiellement Francais et candide/ de qualité rare_ Enfin ni lui ni Gauguin sont des artistes qui puissent avoir l’air de chercher à aller à l’Exp. univers. par des escaliers de service. Rassure-toi là-dessus_ Qu’eux ils n’ont pas pu se taire c’est compréhensible_ Que le mouvement des impressionistes n’a pas eu d’ensemble c’est ce qui prouve qu’ils savent moins bien batailler que d’autres artistes tels Delacroix et Courbet. Enfin j’ai un paysage avec des oliviers et aussi une nouvelle étude de ciel étoilé_ Tout en n’ayant pas vu les dernieres toiles ni de Gauguin ni de Bernard je suis assez persuadé que ces deux études que je te cite sont dans un sentiment paralelle_ Lorsque pendant quelque temps tu auras vu ces deux etudes ainsi que celle du lierre/ mieux que par des paroles je pourrai peutêtre te donner une idée des choses dont Gauguin/ Bernard et moi ont quelquefois causé et qui nous ont preoccupé_ Ce n’est pas un retour au romantique ou à des idees religieuses/ non_ Cependant en passant par le Delacroix davantage que cela paraisse par la couleur et un dessin plus volontaire que l’exactitude trompe l’oeil/ on exprimerait une nature de campagne plus pure que la banlieue/ les cabarets de Paris_ On chercherait à peindre des êtres humains également plus séreins et plus purs que Daumier n’en avait sous les yeux. mais bien entendu en suivant Daumier pour le dessin de cela_ Que cela existe ou n’existe pas nous le laissons de côté mais nous croyons que la nature s’etend au dela de St Ouen. Peutêtre/ tout en lisant Zola/ nous sommes emu par le son du pur Francais de Renan par exemple. Et enfin alors que le Chat noir nous dessine des femmes à sa façon et surtout Forain magistralement/ on fait des siennes/ moins Parisiens mais n’aimant pas moins Paris et ses élégances/ nous cherchons à prouver qu’il y a alors encore tout autre chôse. Gauguin/ Bernard ou moi nous y resterons tous peutêtre et ne vaincrons pas mais pas non plus serons nous vaincus_ nous sommes peutêtre pas là pour l’un ou pour l’autre/ étant là pour consoler ou pour préparer de la peinture plus consolante_ Isaacson et de Haan ne reussiront pas non plus peutetre mais en Hollande ils ont senti le besoin d’affirmer que Rembrandt faisait de la grande peinture et non pas du trompe l’oeil/ eux aussi sentaient autre chose. Si tu peux faire rentoiler la chambre à coucher il vaut mieux le faire faire avant de me l’envoyer.– Je n’ai plus de blanc du tout du tout. Tu me feras bien du plaisir en m’ecrivant de nouveau bientôt. J’y pense si souvent qu’au bout de quelque temps j’espère que dans le mariage tu trouveras à te retremper et que d’ici un an tu auras gagné en santé_ Ce qu’il me serait fort agreable d’avoir ici pour lire de temps en temps ce serait un Shakespeare. Il y en a à un shilling/ Dicks shilling Shakespeare/ qui est complet_ Les editions ne manquent pas et je crois que celles à bon marché sont moins changées que celles plus chères_ Dans tous les cas je n’en veux pas qui coûteraient plus de trois francs_ Maintenant ce qui dans l’envoi est trop mauvais/ mets le de côté tout à fait/ inutile d’en avoir de comme cela; cela peut me servir plus tard pour me rappeler des choses. Ce qu’il y a de bon se verra mieux en étant en plus petit nombre de toiles. Le reste/ si tu le mets à plat entre deux feuilles de carton avec des vieux journaux entre les etudes dans un coin/ c’est tout ce que cela vaut. Je t’envoie un rouleau de dessins_ Poignées de main à toi/ à Jo et aux amis_ t.à t_ Vincent. les dessins hospice d’Arles – l’arbre pleureur dans l’herbe/ les champs et les oliviers/ font suite à ceux de Mont major de dans le temps_ les autres sont des études hatives prises dans le jardin_ Le Shakespeare ne presse pas/ si on n’a pas une edition comme cela/ cela ne prendra pas une éternité pour la faire venir. Ne crains pas que jamais de ma propre volonté je me risquerais sur des hauteurs vertigineuses/ malheureusement nous sommes sujet aux circonstances et aux maladies de notre époque bon gré mal gré. Mais avec tant de précautions que maintenant je prends/ je retomberai difficilement et j’espère que les attaques ne reprendront plus.

My dear Theo, Thanks for your letter of yesterday. I too cannot write as I would wish, but anyway we live in such a disturbed age that there can be no question of having opinions that are firm enough to judge things. I would have very much liked to know if you now still eat together at the restaurant or if you live at home more. I hope so, for in the long run that must be the best. As for me, it’s going well – you’ll understand that after almost half a year now of absolute sobriety in eating, drinking, smoking, with two two-hour baths a week recently, this must clearly calm one down a great deal. So it’s going very well, and as regards work, it occupies and distracts me – which I need very much – far from wearing me out. It gives me great pleasure that Isaäcson found things in my consignment that please him. He and De Haan appear very faithful, which is sufficiently rare these days for it to be worthy of appreciation. And that, as you say, there was another who found something in the yellow and black figure of a woman, that doesn’t surprise me, although I think that its merit lies in the model and not in my painting. I despair of ever finding models. Ah, if I had some from time to time like that one, or like the woman who posed for the Berceuse, I’d do something quite different. I think you did the right thing by not exhibiting paintings of mine at the exhibition by Gauguin and others. There’s reason enough for me to abstain from doing so without offending them as long as I’m not cured myself. For me it’s beyond doubt that Gauguin and Bernard have great and real merit. It’s still perfectly understandable, though, that for beings like them, really alive and young, who must live and try to carve out their path, it’s impossible to turn all their canvases to the wall until it pleases people to admit them somewhere in the official pickle. One causes a stir by exhibiting in the cafés, which I don’t say isn’t in bad taste. But for myself, I have that crime on my conscience, and to the point of doing it twice, having exhibited at the Tambourin and at avenue de Clichy. Not counting the disturbance caused to 81 virtuous cannibals of the good town of Arles and to their excellent mayor. So in any case, I am worse and more blameworthy than they are in that regard (causing a stir quite involuntarily, my word). Young Bernard – according to me – has already made a few absolutely astonishing canvases in which there’s a gentleness and something essentially French and candid, of rare quality. Anyway, neither he nor Gauguin are artists who could look as if they were trying to go to the World Exhibition by the back stairs. You can be sure of that. It’s understandable that they couldn’t keep silent. That the Impressionists’ movement has had no unity is what proves that they’re less skilled fighters than other artists like Delacroix and Courbet. At last I have a landscape with olive trees, and also a new study of a starry sky. Although I haven’t seen the latest canvases either by Gauguin or Bernard, I’m fairly sure that these two studies I speak of are comparable in sentiment. When you’ve seen these two studies for a while, as well as the one of the ivy, I’ll perhaps be able to give you, better than in words, an idea of the things Gauguin, Bernard and I sometimes chatted about and that preoccupied us. It’s not a return to the romantic or to religious ideas, no. However, by going the way of Delacroix, more than it seems, by colour and a more determined drawing than trompe-l’oeil precision, one might express a country nature that is purer than the suburbs, the bars of Paris. One might try to paint human beings who are also more serene and purer than Daumier had before him. But of course following Daumier in the drawing of it. We’ll leave aside whether that exists or doesn’t exist, but we believe that nature extends beyond St-Ouen. Perhaps, while reading Zola, we are moved by the sound of the pure French of Renan, for example. And after all, while Le Chat Noir draws women for us after its own fashion, and above all Forain does so in a masterly way, we do some of our own, less Parisian but no less fond of Paris and its elegances, we try to prove that something else quite different exists. Gauguin, Bernard or I will all remain there perhaps, and won’t overcome but neither will we be overcome. We’re perhaps not there for one thing or the other, being there to console or to prepare for more consolatory painting. Isaäcson and De Haan may not succeed either, but in Holland they’ve felt the need to state that Rembrandt did great painting and not trompe l’oeil, they also felt something different. If you can get the Bedroom lined it’s better to have it done before sending it to me. I have no more white at all at all. You’ll give me a lot of pleasure if you write to me again soon. I so often think that after a while you’ll find in marriage, I hope, the means to gain new strength, and that a year from now your health will have improved. What I’d very much like to have here to read from time to time would be a Shakespeare. There’s one priced at one shilling, Dicks' Shilling Shakespeare, which is complete. There’s no shortage of editions, and I think the cheap ones have been changed less than the more expensive ones. In any case I wouldn’t want one that cost more than three francs. Now, whatever is too bad in the consignment, put it completely to one side, pointless to have stuff like that; it may be of use to me later to remind me of things. Whatever is good will show up better by being part of a smaller number of canvases. The rest, if you put them in a corner, flat between two sheets of cardboard with old newspapers between the studies, that’s all they’re worth. I’m sending you a roll of drawings. Ever yours, Vincent The drawings Hospital in Arles, the weeping tree in the grass, the fields and the olive trees, are a continuation of those from Montmajour from back then. The others are hasty studies done in the garden. There’s no hurry for the Shakespeare, if they don’t have an edition like that, it won’t take an eternity to have one sent. Don’t be afraid that I would ever venture onto dizzy heights of my own free will, unfortunately, whether we like it or not, we’re subject to circumstances and to the illnesses of our time. But with all the precautions I’m now taking, it will be difficult for me to relapse, and I hope that the attacks won’t start again.

This was letter 781. These baths were part of the hydrotherapy treatment; see letter 776, n. 23. This was the fellow named Polack, mentioned by Theo in letter 781, who had praised Vincent’s Marie Ginoux (‘The Arlésienne’) (F 489 / JH 1625). This model was Augustine Roulin. Regarding Café Le Tambourin, where Van Gogh exhibited his own work and some Japanese prints, see letter 571, nn. 3 and 4, and letter 640, n. 5. In November-December 1887 he had organized an exhibition of paintings by himself and his friends in Grand Bouillon-Restaurant du Chalet in avenue de Clichy; see letter 575, n. 9. Van Gogh is referring to the neighbourhood residents, who had signed a petition complaining about him and submitted it to Jacques Tardieu, the mayor of Arles. Thirty people signed the petition. See letter 750, nn. 2 and 3. Probably Olive trees with the Alpilles in the background (F 712 / JH 1740), which Van Gogh later mentions with F 612 (see letter 805).
