DHARMAbase Revenue in paddy and gold that several villages were obliged to pay to the temple. The territories that were bound to pay taxes are described in minute detail. The revenue was measured by the marakkāl Āṭavallāṉ.

The project DHARMA has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement no 809994).

Iṉṉāṭṭu nākaṉakakaṉaThe sequence is visually clear, but the toponym remains unattested in any other Tamil inscription. A modern village called Nākaṉkuṭi exists in the Nannilam taluk; however, the emendation would require suppressing several extra akṣaras, which, given the high degree of accuracy throughout this record, seems very unlikely. No standardised form is proposed; therefore, the name remains in its ambiguous, epigraphic form.-kuṭi Aḷanta-paṭi nilam Irupattu Iraṇṭ' arai yē-y Iraṇṭumā mukkāṇi Araikkāṇi-k kīḻ Irumāvarai Araikkāṇi-k kīḻ Eṭṭumāvilum Ūr-irukkaiyuṅ kuḷaṅkaḷum Aiyyaṉ kōyilum piṭāri kōyilun tīṇṭā-c-cēri yum Ivv-ūr nilattai y-ūṭaṟuttu-p poṉa vāykkālkaḷālum cuṭukāṭṭālum Irai-Ili nilam mukkālē Orumā Araikkāṇi muntirikai-k kīḻ Irumāvarai nīkki Iṟai kaṭṭiṉa nilam Irupattu Oṉṟē-y mukkālē Orumāvarai Araikkāṇi muntirikai-k kīḻ Araikkāṇi-k kīḻ Eṭṭumāviṉāl iṟai kaṭṭi ṉa kāṇi-k-kaṭaṉ rājakesariyōṭ' okkum Āṭaval lāṉ Eṉṉum marakkālāl Aḷakka-k kaṭava nellu iraṇṭ' āyirattu Orunūṟṟu Eṇpattu mukkalaṉē Aiṅkuṟuṇi nāṉāḻi §§ §§

Part D (Villages of [...] and Kiḷinallūr)At the time of Hultzsch’s edition, a flight of steps blocked this part of the wall. He had already proposed that some akṣaras, or even an entire section, might have been lost. The new autopsy and photographic documentation reveal that a significant stretch of text, a whole section in fact, is now visible. Therefore, this edition treats this section (Part D) as the new fourth one. As a result, the subtitles adopted here do not match those in Hultzsch’s edition.

1. Hail! Prosperity! There was engraved on stone, as orally settled, the revenue kāṇikkaṭaṉ in paddy,–which has to be measured by the marakkāl called after Āṭavallāṉ, which is equal to a rājakesari;–and the gold and the money kācu, which have to be paid from the land paying taxes; and there was also engraved on stone the land free from taxes,–including the village-site ūr-nattam, the sacred temples śrīkōyil, the ponds kuḷam, the channels vāykkāl passing through the villages, the paṟai-c-cēri, the kammāṇa-cēri, and the burning-ground cuṭukāṭu,–in the villages, which the lord Śrī-Rājarājadeva had given in the Cōḻa country and in other countries as divine gifts devadāna for the expenses nibandha required by the supreme lord paramasvāminof the sacred stone-temple tirukkaṟṟaḷi, called śrī-Rājarājēśvara,–which the lord śrī-Rājarājadeva had caused to be built at Tañjāvūr,–until the twenty-ninth year of the reign of kō-Rājakēsarivarman, alias śrī-Rājarājadeva, who,–while his heart rejoiced, that, like the goddess of fortune, the goddess of the great earth had become his wife,–in his life of growing strength, during which, having been pleased to cut the vessel in the hall at Kāntaḷūr, he conquered by his army, which was victorious in great battles, Vēṅkai-nāṭu, Gaṅga-pāṭi, Taṭigai-pāṭi, Nuḷampa-pāṭi, Kuṭamalai-nāṭu, Kollam, Kaliṅkam, Īḻa-maṇṭalam, which was the country of the Ciṅkaḷas who possessed rough strength, the seven and a half lakṣas of Iraṭṭa-pāṭi, and twelve thousand ancient islands of the sea, deprived the Ceḻiyas of their splendour, while he was resplendent to such a degree that he was worthy to be worshipped everywhere.

This digital edition treats fractional units such as mukkāl, mukkāṇi, or mākkāṇi as single word forms (e.g., iraṇṭē mukkālē nāṉku mākkāṇi), rather than usual segmentation with hyphens (e.g., iraṇṭē mu-k-kālē nāṉku mā-k-kāṇi). In some cases, segmentation could imply arithmetically misleading parsing. For instance, eṇmāvarai should be written as eṇ-mā v-arai, which could be then interpreted as 8/20 + 1/2. In contrast, here it is kept as such in order to keep the mathematical reading (that is, 8/20 + 1/40) aligned with what it is written on the stone.

Therefore, repeated fractional values throughout this record—those that seem to have formed part of a “fractional grid" used to generate specific values—such as iraṇṭumā 2/20 = 1/10 or eṭṭumā 8/20 = 2/5—are written altogether. Ambiguous strings such as nāṉkumākkāṇi follow this epigraphic-mathematic segmentation, making it nāṉkumā + kāṇi 4/20 + 1/80. Common numeral sequences are spaced in the usual way e.g., iraṇṭu mākkāṇi. This particular convention aims to preserve a readable epigraphic edition that minimises editorial ambiguity in the interpretation of complex strings of numerals.
