comments thus: It is not clear if this inscription refers to the image itself in which case it would serve as its label meaning the "Lord," i.e., Buddha, of, i.e., worshipped in, the maṭha or monastery of the Theras, the Elders. Or the "Lord of the maṭha" may merely mean the head of the maṭha of Theras, any spiritual head or guide. The Buddha was more probably meant (cf. inscription 43).
