The translation of <bibl><ptr target="bib:Sircar1943_02"/></bibl> is somewhat unclear. Indeed, in his translation of the line 1, he reads <foreign>hastiśīrṣavibhītakyāṁ</foreign> and translates <q>residing in Hastiśīrṣavibhītakī</q>. In line 20, his translation of <foreign>hastiśīrṣa-vibhītakyāṁ</foreign> by <q>Hastiśīrṣavibhītakī</q> might be supported by the singular locative. But in lines 23-24, the text compells him to consider Hastiśīrṣa an independant place name. To clarify the problem, I give below the three contexts where the word <foreign>hastiśīrṣa</foreign> appears in the text : <p> <list rend="numbered"> <item>in association with the place name Vibhītakī, but not in compound: <foreign>hastiśīrṣe vibhītakyāṁ</foreign>, line 1</item> <item>in association and in compound with the place name Vibhītakī: <foreign>hastiśīrṣavibhītakyāṁ</foreign>, line 20</item> <item>in compound and in association with another place name Tāpasapotaka : <foreign>hastiśīrṣaprāveśyatāpasapottake</foreign>, line 23</item> </list></p> The first interpretation could be to understand a place name 'Hastiśīrṣa' as <bibl><ptr target="bib:Sanyal1955-1956_01"/></bibl> did. A second possibility is to see <foreign>hastiśīrṣa</foreign> as a compound indicating a large aera. This interpretation is based on my previous observation according to which the geographical indication is presented from the larger to the smaller entity. So it could be possible to consider <foreign>śīrṣa</foreign>- a word used in a geographical manner to indicate that some place is near another larger place and <foreign>hasti</foreign>- a name of place like Hastināpura? If so, the translation could be <q>in the upper part of Hasti</q>, <q>collateral of Hasti</q>, <q>close or next to Hasti</q>. A third possibility could be to consider <foreign>hastiśīrṣa</foreign> a compound composed by the derivated word of the constellation name Hasta followed by <foreign>śīrṣa</foreign>, like in the compound <foreign>mārgaśīrṣa</foreign> <q>the month under the constellation of Mr̥ga</q> <supplied reason="explanation">i.e. november-september</supplied> which is recorded in <ref><ptr target="bib:MonierWilliams1899_01"/></ref> and by several inscriptions (for example: <ref target="http://siddham.uk/inscription/in00090">Betul Charter of Samksobha, year 199</ref>, line 3)<!-- amwb : I also found mārgaśīrṣa in in the Kesaribedā Donation of Arthapati line 13 (siddham IN1003) and in Kauvatal Charter of Sudevarāja line 24 -->. But the irregular derivation in <foreign>hastiśīrṣa</foreign> and the context of its use do not allow a such interpretation. </note> in Gulmagandhikā, in Dhānyapāṭikā, as well as in their hamlets <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sagohāliṣu</foreign></supplied><note> On the meaning of gohālī, see <bibl><ptr target="bib:Griffiths2018_02"/><citedRange unit="page">40-2</citedRange></bibl> </note> and inform them : </p> <p n="2-12"> It will be known by you that the chief of the guild <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kulika</foreign></supplied> Bhīma,<note> Here I adopted the same translation of the word <foreign>kulika</foreign> than in <ref target="DHARMA_INSBengalCharters00034.xml">Jagadispur Charter of the Time of Kumāragupta I</ref> line 16. Among all the inscriptions I have encoded, it is the first time I found this kind of construction --> we really wish,<note> The redundant use of the optative mode with the verb <foreign>iṣ</foreign>- is rendered in the translation by the addition of an intensity adverb. </note> in order to increase the merit of both mothers and fathers of each of us,<note> I attribute to the repetition of <foreign>prati</foreign> a distributive function and translate it by 'each of us'. </note> after purchasing nine <foreign>kulyavāpa</foreign>s <supplied reason="explanation">of waste land</supplied>, give <supplied reason="subaudible">this land</supplied> for the purpose of the performance of the five great sacrifices to the brahmins <supplied reason="explanation">named</supplied> Devabhaṭṭa, Amaradatta and Mahāsenadatta residing in Puṇdravardhana and belonging to the Vājasaneya school.</p> <p n="15-17"> Precisely in the above-mentionned villages, there are lands recognised as waste by those who are following <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ebhis</foreign>, i.e. the record-keepers?</supplied>.<note> I am not sure to understand if <foreign>ebhis</foreign> qualifies persons or information. Maybe it refers to the record-keepers mentioned in line 17. </note> Thus <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>tad</foreign></supplied>, after receiving an amount of eighteen <foreign>dīnāra</foreign>s from us, be so kind as to endorse <supplied reason="subaudible">the sale of</supplied> these nine <foreign>kulyavāpa</foreign>s. </p> <p n="17-18"> Wherefore, after having heard the request of those beginning with the chief of the guild Bhīma, through the investigation of the record-keepers Siṁhanandi and Yaśodāman, what is followed has been established : </p> <p n="18-19">In this territory the sale of one <foreign>kulyavāpa</foreign> in exchange of two <foreign>dīnāra</foreign>s to be used for a permanent endowment of a waste land without revenue charges to be enjoyed in perpetuity is customary. So <supplied reason="explanation">tad</supplied>, let the gift be made! There is no conflict whatsoever <supplied reason="subaudible">with your own cultivation</supplied>.<note> As there is no mention of the king's authority in this plate and given that the expression <foreign>rājārtthavirodha</foreign> found in lines 12-13 of the <ref target="DHARMA_INSBengalCharters00049.xml">Baigram Charter of the Time of Kumāragupta I</ref> seems relatively rare by comparing the use of the expression <foreign>svakarṣaṇāvirodhisthāna</foreign> found in <ref target="DHARMA_INSBengalCharters00049.xml">Baigram Plate</ref> line 18, in <ref target="DHARMA_INSBengalCharters00052.xml">Paharpur Plate</ref> line 19, <ref target="DHARMA_INSBengalCharters00054.xml">Nandapur Plate</ref> line 13 and in <ref target="DHARMA_INSBengalCharters00055.xml">A grant of land to monasteries at Śiṣīpuñja, Madhyamasr̥gālikā and Grāmakūṭagohālī</ref> line 23, I suggest supplying <q>with your own cultivation</q> instead of <q>with the king's interest</q>. <bibl><ptr target="bib:Sircar1943_02"/></bibl> translates this sentence by <q>There is no inconstency <supplied reason="subaudible">of the petitioners' prayer with the interest of the state</supplied> whatsoever</q>. </note></p> <p n="19-24">Once all this <supplied reason="explanation">iti</supplied> has been established, eighteen <foreign>dīnāra</foreign>s collected <supplied reason="explanation">upasaṁhr̥taka</supplied> are taken in cash from those beginning with the chief of the guild Bhīma. The eight <foreign>kulyavāpa</foreign>s<note> One could be surprised that the scribe mentions here eight <foreign>kulyavāpa</foreign>s instead of the nine given at the end. Actually the description given below of these eight <foreign>kulyavāpa</foreign>s includes the localisation of two smaller aeras measuring respectively two <foreign>droṇavāpa</foreign>s <supplied reason="explanation">line 23</supplied> and six <foreign>droṇavāpa</foreign>s <supplied reason="explanation">line 23</supplied>. Precisely, <bibl><ptr target="bib:Sircar1965_02"/><citedRange unit="note">1</citedRange><citedRange unit="page">361</citedRange><citedRange unit="note">10</citedRange><citedRange unit="page">293</citedRange><citedRange unit="note">9</citedRange><citedRange unit="page">288</citedRange></bibl> mentions in the context of the <ref target="DHARMA_INSBengalCharters00052.xml">Paharpur Plate</ref>, the <ref target="DHARMA_INSBengalCharters00048.xml">Damodarpur Copper-plate Inscription of the time of Kumāragupta I</ref>, the <ref target="DHARMA_INSBengalCharters00031.xml">Dhanaidaha Copper-plate Inscription</ref> that one <foreign>kulyavāpa</foreign> equals eight <foreign>droṇavāpa</foreign>s. Consequently the description made here does include the total of the nine <foreign>kulyavāpa</foreign>s given. </note> are located in the south in Vibhītakī next to Hasti,<note> Here there are three possibilities to understand, analyse or correct <foreign>hastiśīrṣavibhītakyāṁ</foreign> : <p> <list rend="numbered"> <item>consider <foreign>śīrṣa</foreign>- as an geographical indication and villages Hastiśīrṣa, Vibhītakī, Dhānyapāṭalikā and Gulmagandhikā</q> </item> </list></p> </note> in the villages Dhānyapāṭalikā and Gulmagandhikā,<note> Here one would have prefered a dual instead of a plural. </note> in Khanī<gap reason="lost" unit="character" quantity="2"/>dī: <list> <item>one <foreign>kulyavāpa</foreign> is located in the north-west of the village Dhānyapāṭalikā surrounded by a yathopari-nirddiṣṭaka-grāma-pradeśeṣv</foreign> and the one used in line 15-16 : <foreign>ebhir evopari-nirddiṣṭaka-grāmeṣu</foreign>. </note> in order to increase the merits of each mother and father of them, those beginning with the chief of the guild <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kulika</foreign></supplied> Bhīma, the scribes <supplied present time <supplied reason="explanation">samupasthita-kālaṁ</supplied>, i.e., the district officers <supplied reason="explanation">viṣayapati</supplied>, the officers, the peasant householders, the council members, as well as the others who in the near future will be administrating <supplied reason="explanation">this land</supplied>,<note> The lines 28-29 are really close to the lines 22-24 of n="29-30">And the venerable Vyāsa said in the <title>Mahābhārata</title>:</p> <p n="1" rend="stanza">The one who would steal land given by himself or another becomes a worm in excrement and is cooked
