					illustrious and victorious great king Devavarman, who is favored by the feet of
					Lord Citrarathasvāmin, devoted to the feet of his lord father, supreme devotee
					of Maheśvara, the Śālaṅkāyana, sacrificer of the Aśvamedha, in Elūra, the
					village headed by (its) headmen is to be addressed:</p><p n="8–14"> ‘To this Gaṇaśarman	of the <foreign xml:lang="san-Latn">gotra</foreign> of the Babhrus, in (this) charming place 
					(i.e. Elūra), are ordered (to be given): twenty 20 <foreign xml:lang="san-Latn">nivartana</foreign>s of land, a house site,
					a house site for those who receive half the crop and the doorkeepers, along with exemption and
					protection. And so (it) has to exempted with all exemptions.’</p><p n="14–15"> In the	victorious year (being) thirteen 13, on the tenth 10 (day) of the dark fortnight
					of Pauṣa.</p><p n="1" rend="stanza">The giver of land revels sixty thousand years in heaven; the one
					who confiscates [land] as well as the one who allows [the confiscation] will
					reside as many [years] in hell.</p><p n="2" rend="stanza">By many land has been given; and by many it	has been protected. Whoever holds land at 
					a given moment, to him does the fruit then belong.</p></div><div type="commentary"><p n="1"><term>bhagavato</term><note>Hultzsch notes: <cit><quote>The genitive bhagavato refers to Chittarathasâmi, the
							first member of the following compound. This is of course a grammatical
							blunder of the officer who drafted the inscription</quote><bibl><ptr target="bib:Hultzschf"/>: <citedRange>59</citedRange></bibl></cit>. The same “blunder”
							is found in EIAD <ref target="DHARMA_INSEIAD00162.xml">162</ref>, also formulated in MIA, which makes one wonder if
							it is really an error; the Śālaṅkāyana plates formulated in Sanskrit
							plates show <foreign xml:lang="san-Latn">bhagavad-</foreign>.</note></p><p n="7"><term>°elūre</term><note><cit><quote>Êlûra, to whose inhabitants the subjoined edict
							was addressed, is no doubt the modern town of Êlûru (Ellore), 7 miles
							from Pedda-Vêgi</quote><bibl><ptr target="bib:Hultzschf"/>: <citedRange>58</citedRange></bibl></cit>.</note></p><p n="7"><term>mududa</term><note>This word, which appears in several other Śālaṅkāyana grants in
							various forms, is taken to mean “headman (of village)” (see <bibl><ptr target="bib:Sircar1966"/>:
							<citedRange>207</citedRange></bibl>). In fact the reading <foreign xml:lang="pra-Latn">muḍuḍa</foreign> is also possible. For parallels, see

							<ref target="DHARMA_INSEIAD00165.xml">165</ref>, l. 4; <ref target="DHARMA_INSEIAD00166.xml">166</ref>, l. 8).</note></p><p n="8"><term>gāmo bhāṇitavvo</term><note>Sircar (on EIAD <ref target="DHARMA_INSEIAD00160.xml">160</ref>) translates <foreign xml:lang="pra-Latn">gāmo</foreign> as ‘villagers’
							and explains: <cit><quote><hi rend="italic">gāma</hi>=Sanskrit <hi rend="italic">grāma</hi>, literally ‘a village’, used here in
								the sense of <hi rend="italic">grāmeyaka</hi></quote><bibl><ptr target="bib:Sircark"/>: <citedRange>146–7</citedRange></bibl></cit>. The same usage of singular <foreign xml:lang="pra-Latn">gāma</foreign> is observed in
							EIAD <ref target="DHARMA_INSEIAD00160.xml">160</ref> and <ref target="DHARMA_INSEIAD00161.xml">161</ref>. In none of these contexts do we feel that translation
							as a plural is absolutely necessary.</note></p><p n="8"><term>°etassa</term><note>Hultzsch notes: <cit><quote>The pronoun ‘this’ evidently had been uttered by the
