pañcaṇha Arahanta śatāṇaṃ Ayaṃ thūbho

pañcaṇha paceṇha This Gen. Pl. ending is attested in AMg, cf. Pischel § 440. As stressed by Pischel § 246, -ṇh- perhaps arose from a confusion between -ṇṇ- and -h- < -s- from the pronominal genitive plural ending in -saṃ. See also Norman 1992: 201. Arahantaśatāṇaṃ> Arahantāgratāṇaṁ Compare III Bhaj 11 which according to my new edition reads paṃcannaṁ vasibhūtasatānaṁ thūpo. The -po in III Bhaj 11 is engraved below the base-line, due to an irregularity of the stone.

This is the stūpa of the five hundred Arahants.

Compare Gokhale’s translation: “The stupa was erected in the honour of ‘Ārya’ was the best ‘arhat’ every day.
