Copie B breaks off at samapta//grāma. °kvaiḥ° °kveḥ° °snaha° I expect here snapana, snāpana or snāna. samakstakṣatriya sama kṣatriya samakṣatriya: emend samastakṣatriya. Cf. 1v7. Or read sama kṣatriya? Cf. sama śaivaka in 8r5. saṁ pamgat samgat puspapāta puspāta marmmananda marmmanantha marmmananda: the reading on Lama is a bit unclear, but Baru clearly has °nda, not °ntha. The reading °nda also yields a proper Sanskrit word. maṅhuri maṅhūri puspapāta puspāta makasirkasi raṅgaḥ makasir kasir aṅgaḥ makasirkasir aṅgaḥ °kasi raṅgaḥ vahas: understand °kasir raṅgaḥ vahas. The word vahas is not otherwise attested; could we be dealing with an error for rājasa? See file HS ‘Note on the village of Damalang’, for possible connection with Singasari stone. kunaṁ, sa° The punctuation is misplaced. I expect kunaṁ sambhandha, although even this would be a unique formulation. The term sambandha is not normally preceded by kunaṁ. The closest parallel I can find is kunəṅ pva sambandhanikaṅ ... in Waringin Pitu 7r4. tāmbra tambra kalilin Emend kaliliran? tiṅkaḥ tiṅkah viṣṇvarccha, na ṅkāne viṣṇvarccha, naṅkāne viṣṇvarccha, ṅkāne: cf. 3r2. makasaṅajñā makasaṅajñā makasaṅajñā: understand makasaṁjñā. Cf. Brahmāṇḍapurāṇa 168 ndatan piṇḍa rūpa saṅajñā dharmanya. And the synonym makanāmadheya below (3r6). pratiṣṭa mahābhāra pratiṣṭa, mahābhāra saṅajñānira saṅajñānira ṅkāne ṅkane agə̄ṁ agəṁ kālani kapratiṣṭanira The words could also be split kālanika pratiṣṭanira, but comparison with 5r5 suggest we may have here a form with prefix ka-, cf. 3r4. vaniṁ hyūn· vaniṁhyun· dai narāryya de narāryya pinakapurassārani paṁhuvusakən pinaka purassāra niṅ aṁhuvusakən pagə:r· pagər· guṅ iṁ bhaya guniṁ bhaya guṅ iṁ bhaya guniṁ bhaya guṅ iṁ bhaya guniṁ bhaya ta On the photo, it rather seems as though the engraver has written ka, but we require ta and the fifference between the two akṣaras can be minimal. guṅ iṁ bhaya guniṁ bhaya lina līna tumapəl·, tumapəl· sirānavasthā I assume that anavasthā is simply a name. Or might we assume irregular aN- derivation from svasthā instead of anvasthā (cf. forms like makasaṅajñā with epenthetic a to avoid complicated clusters)? Or can we split sirān avasthā? tinūtnyan tinūttyan vuga Perhaps emend juga? The word vuga is attested a few times as place name in Central Javanese inscriptions (Kamalagi, face A, l. 5; Kiriṅan, l. 2; Lintakan II.2). brāhmaṇa brāhmana paramartgvedajñā paramartveṅajñā lāvan paranakanikaṁ lāvanya ranaka nikaṁ ryy ayoddhya ryy yayoddhya maḍhaka madaka paramayajurvvedajñā parama yajurvvedajña Agamajñā Agamajña pinarivr̥tta pinarivrtta anyabrāhmaṇa anyabrāhmana R̥gvedajñā pragvedajñā yajurvvedajñā yūrvvedajñā °bhaṭa° °bhada° makanāmāṁ kr̥ṣṇapura makanā, māṁkr̥ṣṇapura Note HS: “Despite the variant readings, there seems little doubt that the passage refers to the dharma named kr̥ṣṇapura, mentioned exactly half a century later in the 1305 inscription of Sukhāmṛta (plate IXa: 6 - IXb: 1, transcr. Boechari 1985/6: 164-168). The passage runs: rāma sang apanji patipati, sira nguni manusuk dharma ring kr̥ṣṇapura.” Cf. same name mentioned in Frankfurt V. apañji nirākāra apañji, nirākāra makasaṅajñā maka saṅajñā anusuka sīma svatantra Has the word dharmma been omitted here? ṅkāneṁ ṅkaneṁ °saāhāṅaālocitta °sahāṅalocitta samaṅkāna samaṅkana saptati Could this be an error or the short form for saptopapatti? But cf. 8r3 below, and Gandhakuṭi charter 1r3 śevakasaptati. kevəhan Or split kevəh an? sakaptini Cf. OJED sakāpti. See also 5v2 below. samaṅkā samaṅkanā sīma sima Ikan i tan I tan The collocation ikan maṅkana is found in the ms. LOr 10.454 of the Uttarakāṇḍa. The first passage (yadyapin uvusa ta rahadyan saṅulun aṅinum amṛta, ikan maṅkana, yayan tan paśara ni urip rahadyan saṅulun təkapniṅ tuhan i ṅulun) is not found in the ed. by Zoetmulder; for the second (kālavan tata molah ri patapaniṅ pañcavati tumutakən kasyasih rakarapva ikan maṅkana kuməla taṅ ulun ri panas tis), Zoetmulder reads ṅūni vi bapa kālanta tamolah ri patapaniṅ Pañcavatī tumūtakən kāsy-asih rāka rapva kami, ikā n maṅkana kumə̄l ata ṅhulun ri panas tīs. The collocation ika n maṅkana is found in several more texts (i.a. Brahmāṇḍapurāṇa). So we must understand ikan as ika-an. Cf. also ikān maṅkana in 8r3. Ankaəkāni ankani aṁrākṣa aṁrakṣa parikṣiṇa parikṣirṇa malapa malama riṁ muhun malapa: emend riṁ puhun malama? (But riṁ muhun malama occurs also in Sima Anglayang!) The final ma looks could possibly be read as pa, but the mu can certainly not be read as pu. kacāmpurana kacampurana rṇnaśaśāṅka pūrṇna śaśāṅka vāni ta ni raṇāṅga ranāṅga gurusuśruṣān·śuśrūṣā guru suśrusān· kadi tiṅkahira It seems these words are somewhat are to fit into the sentence. daini kaniṣṭamaddhyamottama dai nika niṣṭamaddhyamottama My division of words is supported by the inscriptions Paraḍah II (OJO XLVIII), back, l. 41; Liṅgasuntan, face d, l. 8–9; Ālasantan, IV l. 12; Kuṭi, XIab. Aṅăālocitta Aṅalocitta mvaṁṅ aṁlampahakən· mvaṁ ṅalampahakən prakāśita prakaśita apañjy adimūrtti apañji dimūrttī ṅkāneṁ ṅkaneṁ inabhiśeka inabhiśeka maṇikanakasiṅhāsana inabhiśeka tūtniṁ tūttiṁ anəṅgaḥ anəngah dūrggama durggama tan asuna Emend tan asuve? Or passive irrealis somehow derived from asə̄? nityaṅūlahakən nityaṅulahakən nitya ṅūlahakən dharmmaniṁ dharmma ni ankani ṣeṣṭasādhyani an kanisestasādhya ni an:kaniseṣṭasādhyani Boechari and Titi Surti Nastiti have not recognized the verb form ankani (= anəkāni). The problematic consonant sign has two vertical bars while being open at the top, which means we have to choose between p, ph, m, and s. Titi Surti Nastiti’s se is hard to accept, for what is visible of the consonant is not identical to the one in . I admit that I am not able to much better. I tentatively read ṣeṣṭasādhyani and can explain this as standing for sa-iṣṭasādhyani or ceṣṭasādhyani. On iṣṭasādhya and ceṣṭasādhya: cf. 10v5 maṅgihakn īṣṭasādhya; Bhīṣmaparva kəteniṣṭisādhya saṅhulun; OJED s.v. sama śaivaka labdheṣṭaprayojana Cf. 10v2. mālapkna malapkna reṇu caraṇadvayanira Cf. Uttarakāṇḍa 52 (ed. Zoetmulder, p. 112) parəṅ ta yanəmbah maṅusap reṇucaraṇa. But the same text more often has caraṇareṇu or pādareṇu, suggesting that we should interpret reṇu caraṇa as Javanese possessive construction, despite absence of -ni(ṅ). panambahi manə:manə:hi Emend panambahniṁ manə:manə:hniṁ? talapakaniṁ talapakani °hyaṁ °hyan saṅhulun saṅhulum °skhalitāṅdadyakən °skālitāṅdadyakən guṇagrahirāhī guṇa grahi paṅtibhediktibhedī paṅtibhedi namas te sira bhaṭāra namaś śivāya This sequence seems to comport two parenthetic exclamations of the type discussed by Gonda (‘On Old-Javanese Sentence Structure’, p. [134]), who cites a directly comparable case from Koravāśrama 84:35–86:2 lamon devatā, sakeh paraśiṣya de bhaṭṭāra namaś śivāya makādi maheśvara, yayi rudra, yayi śaṅkara, nanak śambhu ‘as to the gods. they are all pupils of the Lord — reverence to Śiva! —: to begin with Maheśvara, ...’. bhūvaṇa sayavadvīpamaṇḍala bhūvana sayavadvīpamaṇḍala bhūvaṇa sayavadvīpa maṇḍala viṣṇvavatāra viṣṇvatāra aurira saharira sampun kasaṁsipta Cf. the same construction in 11v6. sirat i madhuravacana Cf. 9v2 an maṅkana rasani sirat i maṇikira. lāvan sakināptyakən· lavan sakinaptyakən bhedannya Emend bhedanya? sahakāryyayananugrahaniṁ saha kāryyānugrahaniṁ saha kāryyanugraha niṁ sahakāryananugrahaniṁ : understand sahakāryana-anugrahaniṁ? sakveḥnira sakven nira makalarapana Or read maṁkalarapana and emend maṁkana larapana? makabehan ta yan maṅkana It seems that this must be considered a separate parenthetic sentence pamahārsarṣuka pamahārsuka makapramakaiukhe makapramakai makapramakai: Boechari (1985/86: 191 n. 2) identifies this as a scribal error. The word should read pramukhai according to Boechari. Amuṅahakna Emend amaṅguhakna? Or ambuṅahakna? kinaptyaknira kinapatyaknira pan ən i tūtniṁ Both Boechari and Titi Surti Nastiti have not only misread but also misunderstood the text; understand tūtən i as in 10r3. °rājāvaṅka °rājāvaṅka °rājavaṅka emend °rājāmaṅku ndan Must this perhaps be emended ndatan? makadravyekaṁ maka dravyekaṁ maka dr̥vyekaṁ na This syllable is read without any indication of doubt by Boechari, but it seems invisible on the photos I am using. However, there is sufficient space for it, and it may be that the plate is abraded here. turunyājñānira turunyājña nira rasanyājñānira rasanyājña nira kasaṁsipta ta saṁsipta See the same construction in 9v5 kānugrahaniṁ kānugraha ni larapanyan Understand larapan-nya-n or larapan yan? kavnaṅakna kavvaṅa kna kavnaṅa kna makendhikā pahyaṁ makendhikā, pahyaṁ Emend paṁhyaṁ?
