The film: `overlap.mp4` ## How it was made (from the composition's header) ```text CONCEPT — a two-colour risograph print, pulled by two people, with a message neither half carries. A pink cursor, "you", and a blue one, "them", grab a drum each at opposite edges of one sheet and pull toward each other: pink lays "you" and a circle of random dots, blue lays "them" and a second circle. The circles share one grid and one coin per cell: pink inks heads; blue inks tails, except inside a hidden ampersand, where it inks heads too. Each plate alone is the same noise; only exactly in register do the & cells land together and multiply to violet. The blue lands out of register, so nothing shows. A loupe finds dots that miss each other and a doubled mark; "them" clicks beside the mark, the blue snaps into register and "you & them" appears. The print run is every other pair it is for; "them" yanks the stack away; the two pull the name, over + lap, and meet where the r crosses the l; the camera, locked off until then, pushes in on that crossing and tilts down to the line. Fictional product (overlap, a shared canvas for two). Zero assets; one canvas; every value a function of t. t beat moves carries into the next 0.18–1.25 the bed, out of focus the sheet slams in; the focus racks sharp the sheet 0.95–1.48 two people "you" and "them" arrive and grab a drum each the cursors 1.50–3.58 one pass, from both sides pulled in, let go, rolled out: only noise the cursors 3.58–4.20 a rest nothing moves: you ○○ them, something missing the overlap 4.20–5.78 the loupe the cursors make room; dots that miss, a doubled mark the loupe 6.00 in register "them" clicks; the blue snaps; the & appears the sheet 6.35–7.18 the loupe lifts "you & them" reads whole the sheet 7.18–8.50 the print run six sheets slam, each a different pair & pair the stack 8.62–9.67 a new sheet "them" yanks the stack away; a blank sheet slams in "them" 9.67–11.55 the name the same pull, over + lap; the cursors meet at r|l; the crossing the blue snaps into register 11.70–15.00 where they meet, the line, the card the camera pushes in on the r and the l, tilts down end to the line, pulls back out to the whole card CAMERA — locked off (a copy stand over the press bed) until the name is in register, then one operator (OM.rig): into the crossing of r and l, down to the line, back out to the card. Before that the optics are one rack focus and one loupe. MOTION — mechanical: drums pulled in (u²) and rolled out (quadOut), feeds that slam, dots that grow in steps; two springs, both registrations. PALETTE — cream stock on a warm grey bed; fluorescent pink and riso blue, overprinted by multiply. ```
