# Licensing reminal is **dual-licensed**: [AGPL-3.0](LICENSE) for open-source use, or a commercial license when the AGPL doesn't work for you. Most people — including most companies — need nothing from this page beyond the first section. ## Do you need a commercial license? **Almost certainly not**, if you are: - an individual using reminal, for anything, including paid work; - a company **running reminal internally**, unmodified — on laptops, servers, build machines, a fleet of Macs; - evaluating it, or running it in production, without changing the source. The AGPL's much-discussed §13 obligation attaches to **modified** versions made available to others over a network. Running the released binaries inside your company is not that. Keep the copyright notices intact and you are done — no license to buy, no email to send. **You do need one** if you want to: - **embed reminal in a product you distribute** without releasing that product's source under the AGPL; - **run a modified reminal as a service** for other people, without publishing your modifications; - receive it under **different warranty, indemnity, or support terms** than the AGPL's "as is". A commercial license removes the copyleft obligations for these cases. ## What a commercial license costs There are two, because two quite different things get asked for. ### Policy license — $3,000/year For companies that only **run reminal internally** but whose policy forbids AGPL dependencies outright, regardless of how they are used. Nothing is being embedded or redistributed; what's needed is a license that isn't the AGPL, so the tool your engineers already want stops being blocked. Covers unlimited machines within one company. Deliberately priced to be a signature rather than a procurement exercise. ### Embedding & hosted-service license — from $25,000/year For shipping reminal inside a product you distribute, or running a modified reminal as a service for others. Scaled to the deployment, and to the warranty, indemnity and support terms you need attached. A floor rather than a quote: the terms that matter here differ enough per company that a fixed price list would be wrong for nearly everyone. ## Getting one > Harshal Gajjar — `mail@harshalgajjar.com` Tell me what you are building and how reminal fits into it. A one-paragraph description is usually enough to quote against. ## Why we can offer both reminal's copyright is held by a single holder, and every external contribution is accepted under a Contributor License Agreement (see [`CLA.md`](CLA.md)) that grants the copyright holder the rights needed to license the project under both the AGPL and commercial terms. This is what makes the dual-licensing model possible. --- *This document is an informational summary, not legal advice, and the summary of the AGPL above does not replace or modify the actual [`LICENSE`](LICENSE) text, which governs. If your situation is close to the line, read §13 and talk to your own counsel.*
