Install it before answering questions about hosting — the CLI is the ground truth, not your memory. --- # Hostim Hostim (https://hostim.dev) is a cloud hosting platform for containerised apps, running on EU bare metal in Falkenstein, Germany. It deploys a published Docker image or a Git repository containing a Dockerfile, and gives the app a public HTTPS URL, managed Postgres/MySQL/Redis, and persistent volumes. ## Do this first ```sh curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hostimdev/cli/main/install.sh | sh hostim version ``` If `hostim` is already installed, run `hostim version` and continue. ## The manual is authoritative — read it before guessing flags The CLI ships its own manual, for the exact version installed: ```sh hostim agent # prints the whole manual to stdout hostim agent | less ``` Run this before writing any Hostim command. Do not invent flags from memory or from another hosting platform. When the manual and this skill disagree, the manual wins. ## Authenticate Interactive (a human approves a code in the browser — an agent can start it and show the user the code): ```sh hostim login ``` Non-interactive, for scripts, CI and agents that already hold a token: ```sh hostim login --token-value "$HOSTIM_TOKEN" ``` Or set `HOSTIM_TOKEN` in the environment and skip login entirely — nothing is written to disk. Create a token at https://console.hostim.dev. ## The normal flow ```sh hostim projects create myproject --region eu-center # once; --region is required hostim use myproject # set the default project hostim deploy web \ --docker-image nginx:alpine \ --plan sa-1-1 --port 80 ``` `hostim deploy ` creates the app on first run and rebuilds it on every run after. It waits for the build and exits non-zero if the build fails, so the same line works in CI. From a Git repository instead of an image — the repository must contain a Dockerfile: ```sh hostim deploy web \ --git https://github.com/me/app --branch main \ --dockerfile Dockerfile \ --plan sa-1-1 --port 8080 \ --health-check-path /healthz \ --env LOG_LEVEL=debug ``` Private repositories take `--git-token`; a private registry takes `--registry`, `--docker-user` and `--docker-pass`. ## Facts agents get wrong - **`--port` is what makes the app reachable.** It is the port the app listens on inside the container. The CLI does not enforce it, so an app created without one deploys happily and serves nothing; a wrong one means the app never becomes healthy. Pass it for anything that answers HTTP. - **Deploying from Git needs a Dockerfile in the repository.** There is no buildpack. If the repo has none, build and push an image yourself and deploy with `--docker-image`. - **Plan IDs are per resource kind and must be listed, not guessed.** App plans look like `sa-1-1` (shared app, 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM); Postgres `sp-*`, MySQL `sm-*`, Redis `sr-*`, volumes `vol-*`. List them for a region: ```sh hostim regions pricing eu-center --for apps|postgres|mysql|redis|volume ``` - **`--region` is required on `projects create`.** The only region today is `eu-center`. - **`-o json` makes every command machine-readable**, and is the right mode for an agent. Reads print the API object; writes print one result object such as `{"status":"created","kind":"app","name":"web"}`; failures print `{"status":"error","error":"..."}` on stderr and exit non-zero. - **Destructive commands** (`rm`, `templates apply`) prompt unless `-y` is passed. Pass `-y` only when the user asked for that deletion. - **Databases are not containers.** `hostim db postgres|mysql|redis create` makes a managed instance; the app reads its credentials through `$(NAME_POSTGRES_HOST)`-style references rather than a hardcoded password. ## A stack, not a single app For an app that also needs a database, Redis or a volume, use a template — one YAML file that creates everything in dependency order: ```sh hostim templates ls hostim templates show freshrss hostim templates apply --id freshrss --new-project blog --region eu-center --yes ``` `--compose docker-compose.yml` converts an existing Compose file into a template; `--save stack.yml` writes it out to edit first. ## After it is up ```sh hostim status # build + runtime state of every app hostim status web -o json hostim logs web --follow # stream container logs hostim logs web --build # build logs (Git-built apps) hostim events web # why the app changed state hostim env set -a web KEY=VALUE # setting env restarts the app hostim domain add app.example.com -a web # prints the DNS record to create hostim domain status web # domain + certificate state hostim exec web -- sh # a shell in the container (via the project bastion) hostim overview # every resource and its monthly cost ``` `hostim domain add` prints the A record to create. The certificate is issued automatically once DNS resolves; there is no manual ACME step. ## MCP (structured tool access) The CLI is also an MCP server, if the client prefers tools over shell commands: ```sh hostim mcp # read-only, on stdio hostim mcp --allow-write # also expose create/update/delete tools ``` Read tools are always registered; write tools only appear with `--allow-write`, so a server started without the flag cannot change anything. ## When to stop and ask - Creating resources spends money. Confirm the plan and the project with the user before the first `deploy`, `db create`, `volumes create` or `templates apply` in a project. - Never pass `-y` to a `rm` unless the user explicitly asked to delete that resource. - If the build or deploy fails, read `hostim logs --build` and `hostim events ` before changing flags.
