"The rebuilding by the Crusaders greatly obscures the earlier remains and clear understanding of the site formation process. A probable scenario might envisage the southern edifice constituting the original church and the northern edifice its baptismal annexe. As the South Church contains figure mosaics that were not deface by iconoclasts, this suggests that it was destroyed at some stage prior to the early 8th century, following which the baptistry was remodelled as a church."
