Jaffa, 4th-6th century CE. Tombstone. Funerary.

Smoothed front and rough back, with rough unfinished edges

Alpha with v-shaped crossbar. Rounded epsilon. Right diagonal stroke of alpha and lambda is slightly extended upwards. Omicron and rho's circles are very small. Squared sigma. In line 2, vertical bar of upsilon is very short, while in line 3 it is oddly shaped. No measurement is given for letters in line 1, which are evidently smaller on average than the rest of the inscription.

חייא בן אלעזר Εἰας υἱὸςΛαζαρου

Hiyya, son of Eleazar. Eias, son of Lazaros.

The name of the deceased and the patronymic are repeated twice, in Hebrew and Greek, even though חייא is Aramaic. The Greek transliteration Εἰας omits the guttural and shows an inverse iotacism (ι to ει).
