ŠMY son of [PN]
The name Shammai was borne by three men from the tribe of Judah (1 Chron. 2:28), is attested as an element in a number of Semitic names and occurs in a second century BCE inscription from Mount Gerizim. The sign after the bet could also be read as a numeral – the Phoenician number ten: the text would then read "ŠMY, in (the year) 10" or "ŠMY, on the tenth [of month X]".
