דסתס בר של

Dostas son of Šl[...

Since the line opens with a mason's mark, the name is apparently the first word of the inscription, perhaps with the verb following the name. The officer's name, דסתס (Dostas), is short for Dositheos (Δωσίθεος), a Greek name meaning "God's gift." This was a popular name among the Jews of Jerusalem during the Second Temple period. In Talmudic sources it appears in the form דוסא (Dosa) or דוסתאי (Dostay). The father's name, that begins with [...]של, was perhaps שלמיה (like the name of one of the sons of Sanballat, the governor of Samaria).
