# Fly Brain Dungeon Experiments with the real fruit-fly **mushroom body**, the brain's learning and memory centre, taken from the FlyEM **male CNS connectome**. The main project is **[Fly Brain Dungeon](dungeon/)**: a retro dungeon crawler where the monster hunting you is driven by those 4,501 real neurons, and it learns from dopamine as it hunts. **Download:** grab `FlyBrainDungeon.exe` from the [Releases](../../releases) page (Windows, no Python needed). ![The mushroom body's neurons, 2D view](2d-view.png) ## What's here | Path | | |---|---| | [`dungeon/`](dungeon/) | **The game.** You vs. a monster with a mushroom-body brain. See its [README](dungeon/README.md). | | `inspect_data*.py` | Early exploration of the raw connectome tables | | `inspect_data3.py` | Extracts the mushroom body (Kenyon cells, dopamine neurons, MBONs) into `data/mushroom_body_*` | | `simulate*.py`, `export_viz.py` | First spiking-activity experiments on that circuit | | `data/` | The mushroom body subset used by everything above | ## Running from source ``` python -m venv venv venv\Scripts\pip install -r requirements.txt venv\Scripts\python dungeon\app.py ``` The game only needs `data/mushroom_body_*` (included), or just `dungeon/brain_data.npz`. Only the early `inspect_data*.py` scripts need the full raw synapse table `data/weights.feather` (1 GB, not in this repo). It comes from the [MaleCNS v1.0 release](https://male-cns.janelia.org/release/). ## Data credit The connectome data is from the **FlyEM male CNS connectome (MaleCNS v1.0)** by HHMI Janelia, the University of Cambridge, the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology and Google Research, licensed under [CC BY 4.0](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/).
