# Where the data comes from

Everything on screen comes from ATILF's
[Portail lexical](https://www.cnrtl.fr/). The plugin displays it and adds
nothing of its own.

The portal does not produce all of it either: it gathers it. Each tab has its
own provenance, and several come from other laboratories.

The same list is in the panel's own **À propos**, which also carries the
portal's editorial credits.

## The word index

The 87 268 words in `data/words/` are the TLFi's own list, built by walking
CNRTL's paginated listing and shipped with the plugin so that search runs
offline. `tools/build-index.py` regenerates it; the file explains why it comes
from there rather than from the portal's `/api/lexicon`, which is capped at
10 000 entries per letter and would silently truncate A.

Seven of those entries use a headword convention the portal's API refuses. They
are kept in the index — they are real words in the printed dictionary — and a
test pins the fact that they do not resolve, so it stays a known limit rather
than a surprise.

## Terms

The portal's terms of use apply to its content. Read it as you would read the
site, and do not point this at the service in bulk.

or supported by ATILF, the CNRTL, the CNRS or the Université de Lorraine.
