ASOTU Daily Push back
TOGETHER WITH
BYLT

Kyle and Paul are out of town so I (Chris) will do my best to capture their encouraging energy to help you start your day!

Yo! (I feel like they say “yo” sometimes?)

Tuesday doesn’t get enough love. Everybody is waiting for Friday or avoiding Monday, but Tuesday is like a little retry for starting your week. An unsung hero that says “Hey, Monday didn’t go how you want, but the week is still yours if you try!”

So, today is the day to pick who you want to be and what kind of week you want to have.

And give our best to the other unsung heroes around the store today. (Looking at you, accounting! 😉)

Everything You Need to Know About EVs

What's the difference between a BEV, a PHEV, and an EV?

Glad you asked! We don't know. Well, we didn't know, so we looked it up.

We also researched other questions about EVs and gathered all the answers in one place. Check out our EV research article here!

Have questions not covered in the article or about other topics? Send them in and we’ll dig up the answers.

EVs in the US

taking a closer look

The US Treasury is reversing a previous stance and changing its definition of "SUV." The adjustment will make more EVs fall under the SUV category. Electric SUVs retailed at, or below, $80K are eligible for up to $7,500 in tax credits, whereas smaller vehicles cap at $55K.

Same team. The decision follows criticism and lobbying by Tesla, Ford, and GM to change the rule in the interest of the Biden admin's EV adoption goals.

In a different part of the capitol, a bipartisan congressional probe will suss out the extent of the US EV industry's reliance on China.

In short:
  • China is the lead provider of many materials needed for EV production.
  • New deals between OEMs and US sourcing/manufacturing groups could make Chinese suppliers optional with time.
  • The US wants to know the current level of each OEM's reliance, the potential risks to national security, and what, if any, role forced labor plays in the material sourcing industry.

Telling it like it is - An SUV by any other name will still not fit into a compact parking space.

Unlocking Opportunity with E-Bikes

bike time!

Despite all of the attention on EVs lately, electric bikes have actually outsold electric and plug-in hybrids in the US since 2021. In Europe, e-bikes are on track to overtake the number of all vehicles sold, electric or otherwise. With all of that opportunity at hand, many automakers and start-ups are jumping in to develop e-bikes of their own:

Rivian says they’re working on an e-bike; however, it is still unclear if they mean a battery-assisted bicycle or an electric motorcycle. Might we suggest someone first work on creating terms to differentiate the two? 🤔

Magicycle launches their primo "SUV of e-bikes," the Magicyle Deer. It features full suspension, fat tires, speeds of up to 28 miles per hour, and mega BDE (big deal electric energy). 🦌

The over-achievers at Fiido are set to release up to 7 new e-bikes in 2023, including the Kidz, which is the brand's first kid-focused electric balance bike. 👶

Vanpowers City Vanture offers an inexpensive build-it-yourself e-bike. Boy, we sure hope DIY EVs aren't next. 🛠️

Telling it like it is - How about "bie-cycle" and "e-hog"?
CULTURE
2023 Grammy Highlights

grammy egot winner

The 2023 Grammy Awards had several special moments.
  1. Harry Styles’ "Harry's House" won album of the year. The ASOTU team is divided on this decision. Chris listened for the first time yesterday and dug it, but Isaac would rather walk on a pile of LEGO than listen to it. Nathan says Polyphia’s “Remember That You Will Die” should have won, and Char just wishes her little sister would stop sobbing over Mr. Sparklypants McStyles.
  2. Following 4 wins Sunday night, Beyonce officially has the most Grammy awards of any artist in history with 36. She was already the most awarded female artist but surpassed the previous title holder, conductor Georg Solti.
  3. Viola Davis completed an EGOT with a win for her audiobook "Finding Me." In an acceptance speech we all needed to hear, she said she wrote the book to honor her 6-year-old self – “her life, her joy, her trauma, everything."

Telling it like it is - Songs are like dogs, not everybody pets every dog, but every dog has to get pets from somebody. Or else what’s the point in any of this?!

QUICK HITS
  • Ford and Red Bull Racing are collaborating on a top-secret EV project.
  • Bugatti released a collection of  sunglasses that cost more than some cars.
  • AMC implements dynamic pricing based on viewing quality, meaning the more you pay, the better your seat. Choose wisely, or risk ending up with the basement-tier tickets (where you only get to hear rumbles from the loudest parts and whatever crumbs fall through the cracks of the good seats above).
TODAY IN HISTORY
  • 1949: Joe DiMaggio becomes the first $100K/year baseball player for the NY Yankees.
  • 1964: Beatle Mania storms the US as The Beatles land in New York City for the first time.
  • 1985: "New York, New York" announced as the official anthem of NYC.
