Sitting on the main route between Chatham and Maidstone, a stone's throw from the A2 (which traces the Roman road between Dover and London) and next to Chatham rail station you can't really miss the Alexandra. There's been a pub here for 200 years but has recently suffered mixed fortunes. On the plus side it's a Shepherd Neame pub and has never attracted the local "wildlife" and, as a parent, this is the only pub in the area that I call family friendly but with only four pumps, three dedicated to Master Brew and Spitfire, you'll only have the one choice for a seasonal beer - though bottled offerings are available. There are very few decent pubs in Chatham, with less every year. If you're passing, pop in, have a pint and enjoy the quiet atmosphere in the middle of a roundabout.

Sadly The Alex has closed again. This within days of The North Foreland and the Railway Tavern both closing and other local pubs under pressure. Shepherd Neame appear to want to keep the The Alex open and have stated that they are willing to put in a manager as opposed to a tennant landlord. Only time will tell. For now this friendly little pub stands in darkness, testament to the slow death of a british tradition.

Popped in on 5 May 2012, the day after the Alex's re-opening night, and despite only popping in for a pint to see what's been done with the place, I ended up staying for three and having a good chat the new landlords. I really hope things go to plan for these guys and the re-birth of this lovely old pub can only be a good thing.
