> **1/1 Grail**: [Satanist Grail (#8557)](../../grails/satanist.md)

## Cultural Context

**Figures Associated:**
- Jayne Mansfield; Hollywood actress rumored in the documentary "Mansfield 66/67" to have connections to Anton LaVey, with speculation that a satanic curse caused her 1967 car crash death.

- Anton LaVey; founder of the Church of Satan in 1966, author of "The Satanic Bible," who codified Satanism as a philosophy of individualism rather than devil worship.

**Events Associated / Significant Cultural Impact:**
1. The founding of the Church of Satan (1966); Anton LaVey established the first organized Satanic religion in San Francisco, codifying Satanism as a philosophy of individualism, carnality, and skepticism rather than literal devil worship.

2. The Satanic Panic (1980s-90s); a moral panic swept the US claiming widespread Satanic ritual abuse, despite no evidence. This hysteria led to false imprisonments and revealed society's fear of counterculture and non-Christian spirituality.

**Fashion Icons / Symbolism:** Pentagram, Baphomet, devil horns, cape, black robes, inverted cross, Sigil of Baphomet
