## Cultural Context

**Figures Associated:**

**Events Associated / Significant Cultural Impact:**
1. Sufi Dervish Whirling; the "whirling dervishes" practice meditative spinning as zikr (remembrance of God), founded by followers of the 13th-century mystic Rumi in Konya, Turkey. Spinning symbolizes planets orbiting the sun, with one hand raised to receive divine energy and the other lowered to channel it to earth.

2. The poetry of Rumi; Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi became the best-selling poet in America centuries after his death. His mystical verses on love, union with the divine, and the soul's journey transcend religious boundaries.

**Fashion Icons / Symbolism:** Robe, traditional sufi hat, beads, niqab
