His Roman counterpart is Mercury, god of communication and intermediaries. Hermes's defining power is **psychopompia** — the ability to move freely between worlds. He crosses the boundary between Olympus and the underworld, between gods and mortals, between the living and the dead. No other figure in the Greek pantheon moves between realms with such ease. In "TechGnosis: Myth, Magic, and Mysticism in the Age of Information" (1998), Erik Davis argues that cybernetic systems embody a Hermetic logic — that Hermes is effectively the patron figure of networked communication. Davis's concept of the "hermetic imagination" describes how the ancient role of Hermes as boundary-crosser and messenger maps directly onto digital information networks. Drawing the line from Hermes to Satoshi Nakamoto — the pseudonymous, unidentified creator of Bitcoin — extends that logic: the trickster god who moves between worlds becomes the anonymous architect who mediates trustless exchange between strangers. Satoshi exists in two worlds simultaneously — a secret civilian life and a cypherpunk identity that reshaped global finance — and moves between them without ever being caught at the boundary. Like Hermes, the power is in the crossing itself. A statue of Satoshi Nakamoto was erected in Lugano, Switzerland, a city that has adopted Bitcoin as legal tender. The statue is constructed from horizontal metal panels stacked with gaps between them. From the side, the figure appears solid. From the front, only the thin edges of each panel are visible — the figure reduces to a series of horizontal lines. ## Visual Elements Satoshi depicted as Hermes, inspired by the front view of the Lugano statue — the angle at which the figure disappears. One hidden message in the piece. ## Justification Satoshi is a cypherpunk. Cypherpunk representation is central to Mibera. --- **Parcel:** [MiParcel #4488](../miparcels/4488.md) --- [← Back to Index](README.md)
